Random Headlight Action - Help please

Hi there, I have an 07 L2.
The missus has started to freak out (and to be fair I would too) as the headlights (which are always on auto) have turned thereselves off randomly and worryingly at night. Leaving her driving for several second in pitch datk. Just took it in to be looked at and the garage is saying that its connected to the windscreen light sensors. No fau;yts logged in the system so suggestion is that I "damage" the windscreen which is not th original and was replaced about a year ago, Pay £75 excess and that this should solve the issue,
Seems a bit drastic to me.
First question is there diagnosis likely?
Would the windscreen replacement boys replace it if I rang and explained that the garage had advised the windscreen was the problem? Would they argue it as there are loads of potential reasons? Therefore easier for me to do as suggested an inadvertently crack the windsreen. (Not overly happy with this course of action)

Any thoughts/advice very welcome

First of all, at night, switch to ON rather than auto and try and narrow the problem down, if it still occurs then you can rule out the auto system.

Personally, if my lights failed the first thing I would do is stop, driving for several seconds with the lights off you are going to cover quite a way, within a second or two you can switch to manual?
