New to this site.
Well after years of deliberating I purchased an FL2 about 5 months ago (08 SE manual 72k miles) well my worries of buying a vehicle with too much technical/electrical things has come home to roost.
On my way back from holiday in the new forest the fault "HDC Fault" popped up. Still able to drive fine and the cruise control still engages etc fine.
Popped into Exeter, main landrover dealer and had it hooked up at a cost of £57incl VAT, to see if it was a quick fix they stuck it on the machine and said it has a "canbus error" they disconnected the plug on the rear diff and reconnected it but say it can not be reset/cleared.

They have said it is safe to drive but needs at least another 2hrs investigation time to get an idea of the fault is, but as it is a canbus fault they seem to think it is a wiring issue?
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
Had my Defender 90 300tdi for over 5 years and nothing had this 5 months

Here is the fault code list in order all @ 77,627 miles:

U0136-00 BCM Lost comm with diff control module
U0136-87 ATCM Lost comm with diff control module rear
U0415-94 ATCM Invalid data received from ABS control module
U0136-00 ABS Lost comm with diff control module rear

Im sure someone else had this issue and it was a pressure switch/ solonoid , short in the switch in the Haldex unit. Seem to remember dealer wanted hours to diagnose and suspected it was a wiring issue but it was just the switch/sensor

mine showed a HDC fault when the battery went flat due to the glove box light switch falling out of it mounting. That meant the light stayed on and because there was a light on the on board computer stayed on and drained the battery.

Get the battery checked as I have been told a dodgy battery can cause the hdc fault to shw up, also if you know some one that has a code reader get them to plug that in and reset the error, if the error re occurs then its really a fault if it doesn't it was a system hiccup I had a rav4 that popped up an o2 sensor error about once every months for 3 years never had a problem with the car and its emissions never failed the MOT

It's an insane world when you are charged £200+ to get a dealer to plug into a computer which tells then exactly where the fault is so that they can have an opportunity to quote for work!

less than the cost of one dealer diagnostic

cheap code readers are only for EOBD thats "europeon on board diagnostics". basically emission related issues only.
Tools like that will not plug into all the other modules and if they do they will not have any can protection or warning device ! diagnostic tools that are cheap when plugged in have the potentail to cause huge amounts of damage and blow dash boards etc.I have seen it done.

HDC fault when caused by low battery will raise a DTC flag of voltage low.
Defenderben diagnosis from dealer says fault is permanent indicating a short or open curcuit.

Sorry to hear of your problems. You asked about independants. I can recomend Pete Broom at Beacon Garage, he has sorted any problems I had with both my Defenders and FL2s as well as my brother in laws RR.

Simple thing have you checked all the lights (side main beam brake etc) reason I ask you normally get HDC fault and lowering suspension on D3 with a blown bulb, I know freelander2 does not have multi height suspension but worth a look first this happened to my D3 and is quiet common on them, might save you a few pounds.

Update on my HDC fault:
Had the FL2 into an independant today and apparently it is a dead short on a soleniod/pump on the rear diff. This needs replacing at a cost of £230+VAT for soleniod, £10.00+VAT for a seal, £20.00+VAT for special oil plus all the labour.
So say good bye to £400 plus incl VAT.

At the moment I'm totally dissapointed with my FL2 had loads of other makes of vehicles in the last 25 years this is my first car that has cost me silly money to fix.
Driving my trusty old 1994 defender 90 300tdi at the moment which is just always there and works when I need it.

good to hear all fixed.
Obviously the dealer doesn't give you any confidence in the vehicle by saying 2 hours to investigate further ! when they know the most likley culprit.
Part in stock they only have to plug into the loom without fitting to see if the fault will clear and then they have a sure answer. Basically they milk it which is pretty bad for so called professionals .

The dealers I have dealt with are the worst dealerships I have ever dealt with in 35 years !
You may fair better with an indy.

Dont be put off yet, thats just one small failure.Hopefully you should be lucky.
