Hi. I know the book says you should take it easy for the first 500 miles but does anybody know how many miles it is best to have on the clock before towing.

if its a caravan the manual recommends 250,000 miles of running in before towing,

500.......

There is some debate as to whether modern engines really need running in, and brakes only need it for 100 or so really and clutches a minimal amount.

I would stick with what LR say and go for 500 as basically what the books says is treat it gently, and this means putting limited load on the engine, transmission and brakes.
Towing is one of the most strenuous loads you can put on a vehicle, so if you read between the lines of what LR say then basically don't do it in the first 500 miles.

My 800 kms flew by in just over a week and now the i6 at 7000 rpm is a pure pleasure

I couldn't wait. 90 miles was on the clock when I hooked the caravan on and 900 when I returned home.
It was great keeping chicken george behind me all those miles.

My own freelander was a week late ! so i ran mine in towing on a weeks holiday to Dufries(Scotland) and it has never missed a beat and has had the oil topped up once in 7000 mls,that was the most ive ever got to a tank of fuel too!! 400 mls whilst towing 1450kg!!!! But i did keep to 50mph ish,which is faster than most solo cars on the A66 anyway,

Its great to read all the comments and experience of FR2 users. As my FR2 is an automatic its hard to beleive I can thrash the engine, anyway I'll play it safe and take it easy for 500 miles or so. the caravan has done its 250,000 miles so i'll be ok with that.

I'll be towing in France at a steady 80Kmh So i'll not be holding up "chicken george" in Whitby.

a steady 80k, hope your not aiming for the south of France the next ice age will arrive before you get there!

Taken early retirement so Plenty of time to spare don't think i'll make the next ice age though but who knows towing a caravan, thank goodness running in does'nt mean 30,40 50MPH.

250,000 miles at an average speed of 30 mph (and that's generous) = 8333 hours and you call it a holiday!! That nearly a year of towing.
30 mpg = 8333 gallons

5 cars stuck behind you per hour = 41,666 other drivers hours wasted,
