Hi,

The strap of a bag got caught in the lock mechanism of the tailgate of my Freelander 2 when my wife closed the tailgate. While the tailgate is closed there is a message on the driver's display which says "tailgate open" - however when I try to open the tailgate it won't budge. When I attempt to lock the car using remote locking the horn sounds as if a door is open. I managed to untangle the strap from the lock from inside the car - however the door still won't budge and the problem remains. Wonder if anyone has come across this problem before and has any suggestions on how to resolve and avoid going to a dealership?

NO GUARANTEE - BUT:
1: First gently press on the tailgate handle as though you are closing the tailgate by hand, then

2: Using the remote - just use ONLY the "Boot Unlock" button.

I gave that a try a half dozen times however unfortunately it hasn't worked. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Just slammed the boot shut - boot full, ready for a weeks caravanning.
Same senario, display says it's open, but it won't open or lock. Spend an hour trying to unlock it.
Drive down local sleeping policeman street at 40mpg- no luck.
Drive down unmade road at similar speed, airborne in several places, still no luck, go home in discust.

SWMBO comes out with useful suggestion like climb in from the back - full height LR dog guard fitted, it would be a miracle if you could get through those holes.

She then says spray it with WD40 - bearing in mind it's past midnight at this point, getting desperate, I give it a go. One great heave on the door mounted ladder and it comes up. Rubber grommet was stuck in the mechanism. No need for the unlock as it was "just" wedged

And given your combined experience and expertise, would you or Mrs A131 care to advise those of us (the vast majority) who do not have that rare Mantec rear FL2 ladder, what alternative leverage device we could employ to achieve the same effect

To be honest if I had applied that much force to the plastic handle it would probably have come off in my hand . An improvement if you have a large chrome piece fitted.
I suggest a good kick from the inside, if no dog guard is fitted. Pressing the unlock button was a waste of time in my case.

But I suppose the dog and tortoise may just tip the balance and throw you both into a debate on Freelander epistemology

Took just over 6 hrs - not bad towing a caravan for 325 miles.
No stops, but did overheat at least 8 times - mud filled radiators do not help in the inclines on the A30.

Several delicate jet washes later, the trip home took 7 hours and overheated once.

Happened to me, tailgate was not opening, horn going when trying to lock etc. turned out that I gave the tailgate a good hard shove as if closing and it moved a wee bit enough to sort it out. Almost as if the tailgate was not quite shut.
