I seem to remember reading that the Land Rover recommendation was to send the passenger through the flood on foot to test the depth. The boss lady doesn't believe this either!

does it always rain so much in Derbishire? what a memorable holiday.

Memories are often difficult to recall at my age accurately but I do remember that around '64 or '65 that almost every valley in the county was in flood for many weeks. The landscape looked more like Norwegian Fjords. The late 60's saw the start of a county wide massive investment in flood defence civil engineering.

What I am most sure of is that the winter's of my youth in the Peak District were most certainly longer and deeper in snow. I recall once leaving the house by the bedroom window with father, my 5 sisters and my brother all armed with shovels as the snow had drifted so high. We dug out the kitchen back door and mum had a pot of tea ready n waiting. An adventure certainly, not that dad thought so.

In my experience, there is no definitive answer to the original question. LR list their vehicle's wading depth with the usual level of caution we come to expect in this 'modern society', where so many things end up being argued in court.

There will be times when wading over 500mm will be absolutely fine, anfd there will be times when vehicles have ended up in distress in much shallower water.

My advise would always be if you want to challenge your vehicle, learn to do it before trying to challenge yourself, by tackling flowing water. Join a green laning group who'll teach you properly how to handle your vehicle off tarmac. Or 4x4 response team, and recieve the training they'll deliver. Or book an advnture type day/break, where you'll be accompanied and trained by experienced people.

Please, please, don't just point your landy towards water / snow etc, and push the faster pedal, thinking everything will be fine. It usually won't! The quality of the 'seat - stick interface' is as important as vehicle, off the tarmac. A well driven Freelander will go much further than a poorly driven Defender / D4 / RR etc.

Now then CG - its been a very long time indeed but, from memory that looks like the boating lake down "Little Switzerland" in the Matlock Dale as Daniel Defoe once remarked. Not flood waters you rogue Razz

Byron's observation "that there are things in Derbyshire as noble as in Greece or Switzerland" was accurate, and noble indeed was your son's stoic gesture to welcome on board his ship the scurvy landlubber aka CG. The lad deserves a medal. Wink

I'll report back after having mine a few years as to how salt water "helps" the FL2. Shocked Wink

Living on an island prone to flooding at a simple high tide, we tend to go through lots of CV joints, boots, etc. around here. But considering my VW Passat managed to last 'til 155,000 miles, I'm expecting big things from my Landie. Mr. Green CAR HISTORY

Matlock isnt really a little Switzerland more of a little land locked Scarborough really, We did see some small areas of flash flooding a few sandbagged houses but no real floods in that local.

Oh and I saw a lago fl2 stopped on the hard shoulder of the M1 ,a rescue vehicle in attendance and a bunch of people stood round the caravans wheel looking gormless, cheered me up on a rainy day Thumbs Up At work

I quiet agree CG - Matlock and in particular Matlock Bath has steadily gone down hill over the past decades.

Matlock's spa baths are but a distant feint echo of the grand dame's Victorian vibrance. As a child in the summer we'd occasionally go down there on a regular service steam train service to swim in the open air Lido - that's been shut nearly 45yrs now. In those days there were no amusement arcades. As a youth I and my mates again would venture south but this time by road to watch live rock bands in the Pavilion at Matlock Bath. Its roof decayed and the last I saw it was boarded up in danger of collapse. Trying to replicate a seaside resort inland has profited only a few Tartuffians, whose shoddy and trivial spoiling of what was a natural beauty spot and an industrial heritage site, into now a depository of rapacious commercialisation.

When I'm El Presidenté of the Republic of Derbyshire I'll shoot the bl**dy lot of'em (all absent landlords on the Costa Brava - and a couple of'em own caravan sites around Matlock) and restore the dale to its impressive natural majesty.

I must say it was an excellent place to take two young kids, especially in the poor weather, there are lots of family venues ,Chatsworth,Crich tram museum etc etc.

Our luxurious log cabin resort had a great swimming pool, and one a huge soft play center (I hate the places but the kids love them), and to console me in my wet bedraggled state the bar sold an excellent pint of Tetleys Yorkshire bitter.
Perhaps the highlight of the holiday was when a Scotsman bought me a pit of Yorkshire bitter in Derbyshire Laughing At work
