'Whirring' noise on auto box changing up gears

Hi,

Have noticed today that there is a 'whirring' noise as the auto box on my 2010my HSE is changing up through the gears. This is more noticeable between 1st & 2nd and 2nd & 3rd gears but is also there between the higher gears. The noise only lasts for a few seconds and then disappears until the next gearchange.

Any suggestions as to what may be the cause? Confused 2010 HSE TD4 auto, Biscay Blue, Almond Leather, facelift front and rear, detachable towbar, front & rear mudflaps, bib spoilers, clear high level brake light, smooth rear wiper, colour coded door handles.

All MY10 do this, its a built in "characteristic" of the box to dispense with excess torque, there is no fix and it doesn't get any worse

sounds like a noise i have on mine, and was told its normal and they had looked into it in the past when the FL2 was first released

it questioned by me when test driving it with a mechanic, it when my rear diff went, they first replaced a part relating to the diff (i can't recall its name) and i didn't have the noise your refering to for a little while after, then it reappears, then my diff was replaced and the noise went and came back

to me its a sort of WhoshWhooshWhosh noise

I suppose it could be a WhooshWhooshWhoosh noise..... doesn't sound right somehow but if it is 'normal' then maybe I don't need to worry about it for now. 2010 HSE TD4 auto, Biscay Blue, Almond Leather, facelift front and rear, detachable towbar, front & rear mudflaps, bib spoilers, clear high level brake light, smooth rear wiper, colour coded door handles.

If you take the car in for any major type work doing and the battery is disconnected then the noise dissapears for a while until the gearbox learns your driving style. if you drive it hard you don't get the noise, but after a while of careful driving the noise reappears.

There is another link on this subject and you will find it is the dump valve in the auto box system ( I have no idea what I am talking about really!). If you are more robust with the accelerator you will find the noise disappears. It is not a problem. Ralph

Thanks for the replies Thumbs Up Looks like I will have to give it a good blast around the local roads instead of trying to keep the fuel economy at a maximum!! Mona Greeze that is not the reason for being more robust. If you wanted to be "green" you wouldn't buy a Freelander" Ralph

Ours does this also when gently pulling away.

More likely to hear it in slow speed manoeuvring a car park or during stop-start traffic situations.

Sound is more like ZARRR - ZA - ZAZ ZAZ ZARRR

[you have to make this sound this with the tip of your tounge against your teeth, and in under 0.5 of second to get the sound right. No point singing along in time with The National Anthem... it doesn't work]

Having read above that it is some fluid pressure dump, I would have no problem agreeing should it be true. - - - -

Now if yours started or ended with a 'whosh', 'whoosh' or 'whoos' then it could well be similar, but anything begining with 'Z' is usually rear door related. Confused Laughing

A guy from the Russian forum listened to this sound with a remote stethoscope.
He said that it's in the zone of the turbo.

Here's the link: http://lr-club.com/index.php?s=64e4ee2e074...p;p=927479

In a way it's a pertinent thing because, in the moment of the gear change, the ECM's turbo's demand varies (for a smooth gear change) and therefore could be a slight "surge" phenomena in progress there...
