Edinburgh to Stranraer - any good roads/trails to drive?

I'm going to be up in bonnie Scotland at the end of next month and was wondering if anyone can recommend any intersting. I'll be heading up from Hull to Edinburgh then across to Stranraer , actually Castle Douglas. It'd be a shame not to get some good Scottish mud on my wheel arches Very Happy - any suggestions?

I was going to try and take in Kielder forest at some point but it's not looking like that will be on the route now. I rode the forest trail on my BMW motorcycle a few years back but last time I passed in the landie it was shut because of snow. After Castle Douglas we are heading down to Kirby Lonsdale then up to Newcastle before heading back to Hull for the ferry home.

Worth going to the lighthouse on the Mull of Galloway, nice roads down the Mull and if it's a clear day you can see England, Scotland, Isle of Man and both halves of Ireland Very Happy

Kielder trail isn't that exciting - I've done it in just about every car I've owned (including a Sherpa which seized its gearbox half way - not the trail's fault - it was a rubbish recon box) and it's actually a bit tame. That said you do get a lovely overall coating of mud if it's wet. Drove it once when they said it was closed - no problem. Take a few pound coins for the toll machine, and for parking at Kielder if you want to visit the caff.

If you are travelling from Edinburgh take the A702 from Edinburgh to Abington and then instead of the A74 / A75 take the A702 via Thornhill and Moniaive to
St Johns Town Of Dalry and then head on the A762 to Kirkcudbright then across to Castle Douglas.
Takes a bit longer but a hell of a lot nicer for countryside than the A74 and A75.
Very pleasant drive.

. . . but stop in Coulter at The Mill for a refreshment from a coffee to a full dinner. No disapointment. Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!
