Earlier this year I watched a programme on (if I remember correctly) BBC4, the subject of which was the Group B rally cars - their rise and fall. Packed with incredible rally footage, interviews with the influential individuals in the governing body, the factories and of course the drivers.

I'm sorry but I cannot remember the programme's title or the names of the key personalities, but I do recall that the crash of a young Italian driver in his Delta was the tipping point to strict regulation that led to the "calming" down of the sport - and not the fatal crashes that killed many spectators. Plus the laughable BL investment of millions in a "Metro" Group B rally car that only drove into a cul de sac of its own making. I was also stunned (and pleased) to learn that a French women was amongst the fastest drivers of Group B cars.

That TV programme must be out there on the web or on DVD somewhere - if it is - it is worth its weight in gold. Watch it if you get the chance. A wonderful piece of rallying history.

I was lucky enough to have a short drive in a Stratos many years ago. I seem to remember it did not have a clutch but an "on/off" switch! What an animal! John

Fantastic blast from the past, takes me back many a year .............. 

EXCELLENT!!!

I used to marshall in Dalby forest during the Group B era - takes me back. Quartro S4, 037, 6R4 and the rest! If anyone went to Olivers Mount in Scarboro' that was a sight to be seen!!

However, I've just come back from Le Mans and 4 and a bit days since the race finished I can still hear the GT cars ringing in my ears!! Can't beat the Chevys and Astons for a real racing car sound track!!
