Every 2 months or so I keep getting the 'Low Coolant Level' message and when I check, I find that about 0.5 litres is needed for a top up. I have visually checked the system for leaks but everything seems ok and there is no water in the oil. The water pump was checked by LR on the last service.

Any ideas what to look for next guys? Cheers,

Presumably LR also checked the pressure cap - that's the simplest thing. Could be lots of things on a complex engine like this, but it's often down to a head gasket or even cracked head. A pressure test is in order. Doesn't necessarily put oil in the coolant - could be coolant pressure pushing coolant through into cylinder and out the exhaust (steam from exhaust once it gets really bad) or gas pressure from cylinder forcing coolant out of reservoir cap. Common problem on TD5 engine, but I haven't heard of any instances on this engine.

i can remeber on here a few months ago somebody had a issue loosing coolant but no signs of leeks i thin it turned out to be something to do with the oil cooler water jacket going porous you may want to check that out.  rainy-city

Not sure how to check the EGR valve for leaks but it certainly sounds like it could be the culprit.
I will just have to keep that in mind for the time being and keep my fingers crossed as I'm off to Cornwall next week  Cheers,

Mine also suffered loss of coolant after the EGR valve was replaced after it failed in France ! EGR valve it was aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Just something else to add to the never-ending list

Remember the old diesel W123 Mercedes from the '70?
I've seen many of them that had an open water system (not presurized).
This, probably, because the diesel engine is an efficient one and the water temperature will rarelly exceed 90 degrees Celsius (200F).
Even on our FL2 case, if you unscrew the water tank cap, when the engine is hot, the pressure doesn't make the water rise more than 1/3 of an inch.
What about trying to run the FL2 for a while without the system presurized (but somehow closed, to reduce evaporation)?...
I wonder if that low coolant situation will still develop then, without pressure in the system...

Good point Alex. The engines in both my TD5 Defender and my old 200Tdi Disco use to get cooler if they were left ticking over in traffic! John
