The "attempted theft" scenario just doesn't add up. From what you have said and photographed I would suggest you investigate the proposition that has already been suggested i.e. a stress fracture.

Were the roof rails and cross bar factory fitted or attached thereafter by a third party?

The roof panel itself is very flexible - just place your hand anywhere on it and you can gently induce a wobble in that large sheet of metal. If the RR's and CB were fitted later by a third party (Yourself? Independent Garage? A Mate?) then I'd investigate a stress induced fracture, and, if the RR's & CB were fitted by LR authorised personnel then I'd investigate a glass manufacturing failure.

Re the former stress induced:
You may need an auto engineer (or structural engineer) to proved an expert witness statement to secure a claim under LR's warranty.

Re the later manufacturing defect:
I've seen many - yes many - sheets of high tech glass panels just go bang and split days or a few months after fitment into an enclosure. After a few months if no failure has occurred it probably never will. However to prove a manufacturing failure you will need a materials analyst (expert witness) to prove your case.

In both instances your insurers will normally cover this cost. Check your car's insurance contract, or if you are a member of a motoring organisation ask them to come and inspect the damage immediately to provide their "expert" report.

Im with Athelstan with this one - it doesnt make sense for someone to want to try and break in through a fixed glass roof when they can simply put a brick through one of the side windows. You should also see tell tale signs of damage ie footprints, dented roof, 'jimmy' marks etc. To me sounds like a failure and probably caused by the roof rails. (could always take them off and deny ever fitting them - see what LR say to that?)

Trouble with that is you'd have to replace the cover strips that have to be drilled through.

Must admit it doesn't sound like a typical sort of attempted break-in to me Confused 2002 Honda VFR800

i must admit looking at the pics i have to agree, it doesn't look like an attempted break in.
Either way i hope you get it sorted with minimum fuss and cost.

just looking on the OP profile its a 2007, so out of warranty, unless extended and then if that covers glass

I would work on the insurance as a glass claim, its a unopenable window, located in the roof, hit by a stone which caused the roof to shatter through stress, due to the contracting and expanding of the hot/cold weather we have at the moment.

You lucky man Thumbs Up I'm hoping up around Inverness next weekend will be the start of my summer Smile

Looking at your damage Chris, it does look like a 'stress' break, fixed window should mean the same as any other window for insurance.

Bad luck Chris and hope you get it sorted, my previous car gave a loud crack in the sun a couple of yeras ago, on investigation it had clacked right down the middle.

2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Santorini Black

Thanks for all the comments and support guys. I to can't understand why on earth someone would try and break in though the sun roof ! Interesting articles about stress on the sunroof glass however the roof bars were fitted with the car from new and there has never been any signs/sounds of cracking. Thing is when you look at the glass it's been cracked in all four corners, if it was just stress surely is would just shatter and not have carefully smashed glass around the perimeter of the glass ?

Anyway I'm annoyed as my insurers have approved repairers which isn't land rover :S ? so currently driving round in a 1.0 corsa :O :O i Know 1.0 65ps. All that power at my disposal I cannot contain myself Cool When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car
