United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Santorini Black
Any Thoughts?

I have a 2012 (450miles) TD4 XS manual. When braking, just before the car becomes stationary, there is a slight 'knock' from the gear lever area. It is audible (just) and can be felt when holding the lever. I have tried staying in gear and it is the same as if I depress the clutch. It's almost as if there is slack in the drive chain which sounds when the drive shaft stops but the car is still moving. Should I be concerned?

It is nothing to worry about, mine does the same.

Apparently there is a solenoid that stops you accidentally putting the car into reverse when you go over 10 MPH. The noise and knock you are feeling is the solenoid disengaging as your speed drops to below 10 MPH.

Correct, you cant hear it on my own FL2, but the brand new loan FL2 I had when mine went in for service gave a good clunk as the solenoid operated, I guess it must be how accurately its adjusted, if it clears or if it clunks?

Thanks guys,
I get a bit paranoid when I hear such noises ( I think it must be an age thing!)

I know what you mean. I had only had mine 7 days from new when I first discovered the noise/knock. Took it back to the dealer and one of their technicians came out for a test drive and told me what it was.
