Surface rust under car ... normal?

Hi All
I'm a newbie ... so please be gentle Confused
I've had my 2011 TD4 manual for a week and bit and when I was cleaning (more like rubbing it gently) it today I got underneath to have a bit of a look.
The rear drive shafts/axle (diff to wheel) have a full cover of what looks like surface rust as do the brackets holding the exhaust system up.
Is this normal? Everything else looks so sparkling clean and shiny.
Also, are there any after market plates to protect the plastic fuel tanks ... they look pretty exposed.
Thanks

Yes, the rear shafts are only steel, and have no protective coating on them ,as its not really required. That said, if the OCD in you wants them clean and shiny, you can give them a rub down and paint Thumbs Up

I imagine the car will be dead a long time before a rusty driveshaft gives any issues. Strathearn Engineering

I know what you mean, doesnt look good and can understand you wanting it nice and new looking, but you cant see it unless you stand on your head, agreed.
Still no matter, I mean you cant normally see your underpants either but its nice to know they are clean too isnt it? Very Happy doesnt affect what they do, its just not right.

Thanks guys
Good to know it is not unusual ... although my OCD does want to chrome it ... do drive shafts come in stainless? Smile Perhaps if I just cover the lot in mud I'll fell better.
What aftermarket underbody protection is around in Aus?
