Is the Earth failing for you?

A colleague of mine was telling me of his woes with his non-LR car.

All sorts of electrical faults and eventually wouldn't open with remote and immobiliser wouldn't deactivate.

Called out the nice man from RAC/AA (can't remember which he said!!)

Fault diagnosed as a 'Failed Earth/Ground Connection between battery and Gearbox'

Nice assistance man put a temporary earth/ground connection between said battery and gearbox and everything has worked 100% for 4 days - no fault lights at all!!!!!

So not just LR then Very Happy 2002 Honda VFR800

I once had an Escort XR3i (I know, don't say it...) which developed a fault on Xmas Day, taking my mum home down the motorway. Every time I used the wipers, indicated, braked or used any electrical circuit, the bloody car would lurch and jump, with electrics going mad... windows winding up and down, lights on & off, instrument panel going crazy.

I pulled off the mway, parked in a farm and rang my father in law for a lift. Next day I went back & found that it was caused by a loose earth strap on the inner wing in the engine compartment. 20 seconds tightening it up and all OK. Well, I say OK but it was a rubbish car, known by all as the sh Censored itemobile.

Not sure if modern cars would fall foul of that but worth noting... ...

I remember picking up an Aus**n Pric**ss (avoiding the swear filter there Rolling Eyes ) from the garage after they'd been working on the engine. They had failed to re-connect the engine earth strap. The car still ran, but it was using the throttle cable as the earth strap. On the way home the throttle cable over heated and melted part of its casing - the end result was the throttle jammed full open on the way home! Shocked

Predictably, a Princ**s (swear filter again!) on full throttle is little faster than one with the engine switched off, so it could have been a lot worse! Laughing Put it in to neutral and rolled to a halt with the engine revving off the scale before we managed to switch it off.

A*s*in Pr***ess ha ha ha ... I had an... Ambassador !!!! OFFICIALLY the worst car in the known universe. Slow, unreliable, handled badly, braked intermittently, etc etc. Truly execrable. Well mine was. It was a company car and at that time, no choice was offered cos the firm I worked for had a deal going with BL. We sold them IT, they leased us cars. Mind you the IT was just as good ha ha ...

Nope... that's MUCH too advanced... you can clearly see usable images on the screen, implying all sorts of other things (OS, CPU, cabling etc) are all working. Such a rarity in those days. S500... groan ...
