Scotster, here is my update you asked for.

I have bought the Thule 9104. It is extremely well made and sturdy. It took me a while to assemble, even though it is only 6 bolts, the instructions are basically pictures which I found a little confusing.

It takes me about 20 seconds to fit to the rear tailgate, and half that to remove.
My wife's mountain bike fits easily without the optional crossbar accessory.
I can open the tailgate with the bike in situ, although I need to use a broom to keep the tailgate open due to the extra weight.

I will have to remove the rear wiper fuse as the carrier rests within the swept area. I cannot risk the wiper automatically working when I select reverse gear whilst the front wipers are on.

If you tow a caravan with many cycles on carrier, check you have a long enough A frame to prevent caravan touching cycles on a tight turn.

I've worked it out now! C vans are for people who wet the bed and cant stay in hotels due to the embarrassment. So next time your stuck behind one its maybe better not to try any sudden overtaking manoeuvre's as you may startle the driver and cause him to leak!

Seriously though, why didn't you go for the tow bar mounted rack that fit behind the tow ball.

Yes that is correct.

I did look at the maxxraxx, which folds back, but too complicated.

With what I have now I can instantely open the tailgate, albeit rather heavy with rack and bike, but I can manage ok.

And, it only takes seconds to clip the rack on or off.
