VIN number - what does it tell you?

Can anyone either explain the VIN number or point me in the direction of any article as to how to read it and what information it holds about the car? 2010 HSE TD4 auto, Biscay Blue, Almond Leather, facelift front and rear, detachable towbar, front & rear mudflaps, bib spoilers, clear high level brake light, smooth rear wiper, colour coded door handles.

Previous Land Rovers:
2007 Freelander 2 HSE i6 in Stornoway Grey
1991 Discovery 200tdi 3 door in blue

From the vin number I can look up all the details of your vehical from with what was fitted from new including build date etc, if you want to now anything about your car just pm me with your full vin and your question and I would be happy to look it up for you Thumbs Up

It's been mentioned before, if the 8th character is a 'C' then you have a DPF (Alex's link shows this) but mine and others that have a DPF do not have a 'C'.
Has the format of the Vins changed?

The addendum is as follows:

Position 5:
- B - Two-wheel drive (2WD) (only for diesel vehicles with manual transmission), from 2011MY

Position 8:
- D - 2.2 Diesel (190HP) from 2011MY
- E - 2.2 Diesel (190HP) with cDPF from 2011MY

Position 10:
- L - Pune, India, from 2011MY
