Humming noise - brake servo pump?

Lately my car developed a strange kind of noise. As its engine is gaining tempereture, the noise apears while braking, and after some longer journey it is there every time I put my foot off the throttle. It becomes louder while braking and it is rather loud - my passnegers hear it clearly.
I can describe it only as a continous whine or humm. Unfortunately it is quite annoying after some time spent in the car. Any ideas what could it be? My first guess would be the brake servo pump - as it seems to have a corelation with braking and/or not accelerating.
