Looking at buying my first freelander 2 soon and was hoping someone on here could help me with the standard FL sat nav?
It seems to have a lot of bad press on here so was just wondering why is wrong with it? just weighing up if it is worth looking for one fitted as standard or doing one of the mods on here?

Hi wilkie, I have a factory fitted one and it seems to work fine, Ive used it to travel all over the country with no problems.
The best satnav I have used and like the most is a Tom Tom which I use in my works van but thats just my personal preferance.

It works fine, just not as intuitive as a TomTom. I wouldn't put it at the top of your list of must haves but certainly useful.

A tomtom is cosiderably cheaper than extra price of buying one already fitted..it also works unlike the valve driven LR satnav with added sextant which is a damn failure for a car which costs 25K upwards..when a tomtom costs just over £100

Do not pay extra for a FL2 just cos it has a LR satnav...money down the drain..and you'll have lost a handy cubbyhole for the privilege too

I don't have a problem with my factory fit SatNav and have had it on both my Freelanders. Once you get used to it I find it is OK and have successfully used it to get to and from Switzerland on non-autoroute roads without any problems.

The last time I went on a long journey where I havent been before the satnav got me a little confused whe she told me a set of directions followed be an instruction to go SLIGHTY RIGHT and I thought to my self W T
I thought you either turn left, turn right or go stright on or the usual roundabout info

Totally confused the salesman when I asked how to get 3D view AKA most other sat nav. He was determined it could do it  Prog rock is cool!

The Sat Nav in my SE works, but just not as good as my Tom Tom. The LR sat gives you a graphical choice of 3 routes, none of which a Tom Tom would choose. It cannot advise of speed cams, it is very poor at advising of traffic on route. For any serious journeys, I always use the Tom Tom. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Really can't understand why LR haven't addressed the issues you have all raised? I'm no technical guru but surely the whole thing could be sorted with an upgrade DVD or similar?

Land rover say nav is absolutely fine. Use mine every day without any problems. And it's great to have it there all the time at a touch of a button!!

Mine is very good for advising traffic, so maybe user error for others

Tom toms look sh!t stuck to the screen to and leave a gash mark

The portable sat navs are fine, I just think that there must be a better "universal" way to fix them than the windscreen sucker.

A polished area on the dash would be great.

Icing on the cake would be if car makers could fit USB power sockets in the dash as such devices are now so common. Prog rock is cool!

Well, I have to say I am pretty OK with my satnav (built-in). All different satnavs have their quirks... I am e.g. not fond at all of Tom-tom, I had 2 and they were a waste of money. I also had Navigon and that too, was just s t.

Anyway, it all comes down to your needs: do you need a "TV" that takes your attention off the road with swooshing 3-d pictures, or is it "good enough" with a map and road directions?

IMHO I think it should be enough with arrows and distance directions...

What I think is good with the LR built-in satnav is that you can determine the scale of the nav map yourself, from 50 m scale to several km.
This gives a good overview, where most satnavs automatically will zoom in and out with no control.

Also, you should be aware that NO satnav will give you "your" road directions. It is a help to get you somewhere you want to go, but you still have to use your brain - the satnav is not a brain substitute. It's never too late to learn something new...

Mine seems fine and to be honest why do I need 3D etc. As per the previous post I need simple instructions without the add ons that never get used.

The advantage of it being built in is that it is not so easy to nick , so is no added temptation to the thieves.

If you have a car that needs a tom tom or similar ,which I also have , then do remeber that you need to remove the sticker mark from the screen as the thieves know the Sat Nav is probably still in the car. After all it is unlikely you will want to carry it about in your pocket.
