And what about how much the Terrain Response is used? In normal mode the drive is split 90/10 front/rear so the rear diff is not much more than "idling" whereas in off road mode it can be 50/50...may have an effect? John

It has done 20k, I asked if this is a one off and it seems it is not, he has had them fail at as little as 12k, LR are aware apparently, of the problem but cannot identify which vehicles that it will affect, it is thought to be caused by the over tightening of the Diff Pinion Nut in assembly, so it may be a case of one of the assemblers taking a short cut and not torquing up the nut correctly.

Ad123456789101112131415 is correct, just been upto Team Valley LR and had the whining noise diagnosed as the Pinion Bearing in the rear diff, basically confiremed the same as ad, over toqueing of the the bearing, been quoted £400 to do the work, cars booked in next Thursday

Have also contacted LR Customer Service, the cars just 5 years old, I know it's out of warranty, but I suggested that it may be a manufacturing defect espically as quite a few owners are experiancing the same noise (TVLR confirmed they had recently had a few in ) and some on the forum have had theirs changed. I also quoted LTB00342v2/2011 which is the bulliten number the Dealer has been issued instructing them on the repair,

Waiting for a call back as the nice lady on the phone said that she would need to escalate the call

I had a new diff assembly last May due to noisy pinion bearing and the service dealer near where I was working all week did not have all the tools needed to change just the bearing. Now the noise is back 15k miles later. My trusty Ripon LR technician took it out on Friday and thinks it is the early stages of LH rear wheel brg! Claims he can get the note of the noise to change by steering right (I couldn't!).
I am not convinced and I asked if they wanted me to run it on a bit but, no, its booked in for new wheel bearing next Monday which will either fix it or "uncloud" the diff nose noise.
I'll keep you posted

Well just had my call back from LR Customer Service as promised and it's a no go, not even a contribution. Was worth a try and the lady on the phone did state that LR are aware of the problem on some of its vehicles. Basically no extended warranty,no deal as we think your not showing your loyalty to LR Censored

. Can't fault the lady on the phone as she did everything a promised ie kept me informed and phoned back when she said she would.

"Loyalty to them" Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused

What about loyalty to the customers who have bought their vehicles with a 'now known' problem!!!!!

If it was a 'known' problem would any of you have still bought it????????

In my book loyalty has to be earned not just expected Thumbs Up 2002 Honda VFR800

Car has been at Ripon LR for 2 days to invetigate noise and change necessary parts. Outcome is that bearing wear (presumably wheel?) is not at a level to justify changing and noted that rear rtyres are feathering so changed L-R.
The noise level is definitely better but 10-mile trip home was not enough to be sure; I have a normal long commuite end of the week so will be able to listen carefully cold and hot.
By the by, I did 350 miles in the 48000 FL2 GS courtesy car. It had more of a bearing (or tyre?) noise than mine! Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red
