Hi have just bought a FL2, 2006 with 60k. Have noticed that the diesel engine rattle is loud and has got a lot worse since i bought it. Have tried running the tank right down and then filling up with BP Ultimate, with little difference. Have checked the bolt behind the left hand indicator and thats tight. Have checked the grommet around the steering colum, which is fine. All recommendations from posts on here. Then took it my local LR specialist who listened to and said it was normal. Although it was being typically quite at that time.
It is obviously worst when cold then gets better as it warms up but then gets worst again when hot. Its especially noticeable in 1st 2nd and 3rd between 1750-2250RPM. This also correponds with removing overfilled oil back down to max mark on the dip stick. I am wondering if it has the correct dipstick in it. The engine performance is fine its just the noise.
Although is my first FR2 i do have diesel experience with a VW T5 2.5 diesel and still own a Discovery 300TDI which is quieter than this. If this is normal then i would not have been happy if i had bought it new at £30-£35k.

Do you know if the engine has been modified/improved in any sort of way? The most obvious cause of increased combustion noise is lack of EGR, which could be down to several things 1) blanked-off, 2) MAF meter reading low, 3) fault in EGR control circuit.

Failing a lack of MAF, the next most important thing is fuel feed and return pressures, which will determine the way that the injector needle control is able to manage pilot fuel injection. A decent Diesel specialist would be able to put some gear across the engine and give you an impartial opinion as to the cause - I would look for a good Bosch service centre in your area. There is no point taking this sort of thing to a LR dealer, as they will not be equipped to cope with detail diagnostic work.

The 300TDi is a fantastic engine, and continues to be the true mainstay of Landrovers in far-flung places!! The man who makes his living fixing Landrovers will never go hungry.

From what I've know, there is no such thing (knock sensor) in the diesel FL2, as the diesel engine is by default a compression ignited engine. In other words a "knocking" engine.
Maybe I am not up to date with things, but only gasoline engines has such things as knocking sensors because in there the detonations (knocks) can seriously damage the engine. The diesel engine is by default a "detonating" engine.
Of course, the modern CR technology made the burning process more uniform and seems that the diesels are more and more refined, but in diesels knocking is more or less unavoidable, therefore no need of a knocking sensor.

My 07 FL2 quitened down after adding the 2 stroke oil, worth a try and it wont do any harm. If not you can try BG244 additive which gives the injectors etc a good clean out. you can read about it here;

Have tried Redex diesel treatment but no change yet.
Earlier this week the temprature was freezing in the morning. The engine was a lot quieter until it started to warm up. I guess that points to thin oil although the car was main dealer serviced before i bought it.

You mention the knock was worse when warmed up? Mine was definitely worse on initial cold starts during our recent cold snap (-12) but quickly improved now its warmer. I found that 2 stroke quietened things down better than Millers or Redex - worth a try (and cheaper too)

If questionable oil was used on the last change then I would stick some decent stuff in as a precaution Cheers,

It is interesting that you should mention insulation. The under bonnet insulation "Blanket" on her Ladyship's FL2 behaves like a yellow sand storm every time you lift the bonnet up. Flakes fall from it (the inner sandwich material not the black outer envelop) and leave yellow "ash" all over the place

When asked about this, the local official LR service centre say: "that's normal - they all do it with age and no LR will not replace it under warranty"

Simon i can't comment on that but for your info i use a 330ml plastic pop bottle and fill it up to the sholder point which is 300ml quick and easy dosage at the pump.
