Bearing Noises

For the last few weeks I have not been reading certain threads on here, any regarding to Wheel Bearings, Diffs, Haldex Units, I felt I was getting paranoid and found myself actually going out and listening for noises. For the last three weeks it has been hell, kept thinking I was hearing things, SWMBO was no help, being a bit mutton she cant here low resonating sounds.
After going out in the Freely this afternoon it was terrible, at 30mph it was droning, it has only done a hundred miles since I was in it on Saturday, so I diverted to the local dealer, took a Technician up the road in it, he has confirmed the noise is there, great at least I'm not hearing things. He has confirmed Rear Diff Pinion Bearing, he is already working on one with the same problem, so booked in for next Wednesday.

It has done 20k, I asked if this is a one off and it seems it is not, he has had them fail at as little as 12k, LR are aware apparently, of the problem but cannot identify which vehicles that it will affect, it is thought to be caused by the over tightening of the Diff Pinion Nut in assembly, so it may be a case of one of the assemblers taking a short cut and not torquing up the nut correctly.

Common sense would say that the diff is assembled with tools that are pre-set and calibrated and can not be changed by the operator. The usual cause of overtightening by "home" mechanics and probably a few professional ones is failing to observe rules where the torque is applied to clean dry threads, not lubricated ones, again I can't see that being a problem in an assembly situation, perhaps it is just a hit and miss batch component thing where everything is in tolerance limits for inspection but certain combinations of those tolerances fail early. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

So Andy, give me the whole story, you've made us all paranoid now Sad
At what speed? a constant drone or varying in pitch? exactly at 30mph? is it anything like the same noise as tyre roar? any other telltale signs or noises to it?

Waiting in anticipation, this forum is bad for your health Whistle

It was worst at 30mph, no engine load, but an awful whine, this would then stay all the time till you came to a stop, if you accelerated it tended to quiten a bit, but one thing it deteriated very quickly, it was only three weeks when I first suspected it and in that time 750 miles, gone from is that a whine, to Censored WHAT IS THAT NOISE.

The dealer seems really good about getting it sorted, Censored happens, I would still by another tomorrow.
