Who wants to go to France anyway? half of them, if not more, don't speak English- eat frogs legs- and all drive on the wrong side of the road. On top of that they don't try and stop illegal immigrants from camping outside Calais

I quite like france, though I have only been in the Alps, or flying down the motors a couple of times when i didn't fly, or hopping off the ferry to go to Oustend for a PCensored up

I don't speak french, so it's no different to them coming to the UK on their hols, but I found speaking loud in English whilst pointing gets me through what i want Embarassed Laughing

So, passing through France I'm required to have 2 breathalysers, a hi-Viz Vest, spare set of bulbs, no speed camera detector, head lamp adjusted or taped up, euros for the tolls

Sounds like a fun day out Thumbs Up

You need a hi vis vest for all vehicle occupants, and they must be in the passenger compartment, not the luggage area Smile

France 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Narvik Black

Although not mandatory it is also advisable to carry a fire extinguisher and first aid kit because in France you are bound by law to render assistance to anyone caught in an accident if you are first on the scene.

Technically you only need a Hi Viz for the driver....but if any other passenger gets out of the car they must have one. And yes, the driver must have the vest to hand and not in the boot!

Oh and Mr Pinks, if you carried all that stuff you would still get done......no warning triangel! Very Happy John

Wife often has a plaster in her handbag for those high heal blisters, so thats the first aid kit covered

To be helpful here is a list:
Driving Licence
Registration Documentation
Certificate of Insurance
MOT Certificate (if the vehicle needs one under UK law)
Display a GB Sticker (if not incorporated into the number plate)
First Aid Kit
Fire Extinguisher
Spare Bulb Kit
Fitted Beam Deflectors - or - Headlamps' Adjusted
A Warning Triangle
Reflective Warning Vests (for all occupants) and as Tandemman states, in the passenger compartment!
Child Safety Seats (when children onboard)
Seat Belts must be worn by all passengers Front & Rear
Spare Pair of Prescription Glasses (if the Driver needs Glasses or wears Contact Lenses)
and finally:
a) do remember that the use of a mobile 'phone is unlawful in France when driving - even a mobile with a hand's free facility, although you'll see many using their 'phones! Their law on this has yet to be revised to acknowledge advances in communications technology.
b) if you come across the scene of an accident or a vehicle fire you must render assistance. if you fail to stop you will be breaking the law.
c) and yes - radar detecting devises are not permitted to be carried in vehicles even if they disconnected. If you wish to transport one it must be in a sealed package in the boot/load space area.
d) alcohol must not be carried in unopened containers or consumed whilst driving.
e) the Driver's alcohol to blood reading must not exceed 0,5%
f) it is illegal to carry any fuel in spare containers
g) the Emergency Services (all services) telephone number is: 112 - and Roadside Breakdown Assistance: 0800 08 92 22

The above is my current understanding and accurate on this day.

It is a misconception that you legally require a set of lamps, they can issue an on the spot fine or have your vehicle towed away for having a Lamp out, hence the advice is to carry a spare set, not that it helps in sone cases as replacing a Head light lamp on some vehicles is a major task involving a front end strip down.
Also as I understand it, it is only a requirement to have one Hi Viz in the vehicle in France, has this changed? I know Spain it is a requirement for all occupents. It can be dangerous to wear Hi Viz anyway, The Highways Agency have stated that if you see something on the side of the road which attracts your attention you will without realising it steer towards it, so perhaps you are not so well off stood by the side of the road in full glare of the passing traffic Confused
Also I have read that the Gendarmes are not allowed to touch your Sat Navs to see if the cameras are installed Confused

A SatNav, is NOT a radar detector, it is not illegal to have a SatNav which displays the position of a camera, it is illegal to use a device that detects or jams radar signals.

It is not the responsibility of the provider of the vehicle - it is the driver who is liable for any traffic violation. This applies not only to France, but to most EU member states.

I think you will find as of the first of Jan this year it became illegal in France to have the locations of Speed Cameras on a GPS Device.

Edit: 3rd of Jan.

This page is quite useful: http://about-france.com/travel.htm
Doesn't cover everything but has some extra detail on speed cameras.
