United Kingdom 2009 Freelander 2 TD4_e XS Manual Biscay Blue
Large picture of rear axle on drivers information screen.

Hi,

Can any one help please?

Yesterday I got bogged down in a farmers track in deep mud ruts caused by the tractors. I put the terrain response in mud ruts mode and got out safely but noticed on the display a large picture of what looked like the rear axle, wheels and diff. This when it came on filled the whole screen and continued to come on intermittantly till I turned the response off.

I have never seen it before and it didnt come on during the journey home. I have been all the way through the owners handbook and couldn't find this shown anywhere.

Is this normal or is it trying to tell me that the rear diff is knackered?

Help please.

Adrian.

Censored hell you really have broke it now Shocked

Or it's a picture of the front axles telling you which direction your wheels are pointing in, so when you make it out of a rut, by turning side to side to get grip with the tyre wall, you don't drive off and end up turning round because your wheels are turned

Hi Thanks,

So which is it BROKE or a little picture showing which way the wheels are turned. If so that would of been useful knowledge.

Is there anywhere you can get a manual to learn more about the features of Terrain response?

You can see it at any time. Just put the car in a special program and turn the wheels. Just dont drive too much in the special programs on a normal road surface, since I understand it can be bad for the car. 1st time FL2 owner. 2007 SE i6 in Tambora Flame.

Its actualy telling you that it cant cope with just two wheel drive so its electronicaly engaging 4 wheel drive to get you out of your pridicament. Whe you see it coming on and off its engaging and disengaging as and when needed Thumbs Up

You dont need special programs on for it to come on. It will come on in normal mode. Npinks, why do you think it displays it in the information window ???? Your car drives in two wheel drive and when needed the rear wheels are ingaged automaticaly.
You would know this if you did any real off roading Rolling with laughter

What caught me out is that i've used the terrain response but never seen it before. Perhaps this time was the only occasion it was really having to do something.

I thought freelander was 4wd all the time but varied the percentages between front and back on terrain response chosen and conditions measured.

In normal road use the Freelander is 98% front wheel drive and 2% rear wheel drive or thereabouts. When it senses the need to give more drive to the rear wheels it will do so splitting 50%-50%. The axle/wheel symbol comes on in TR programs to show you where the front wheels are pointing, particularly useful in mud and ruts.

The Haldex allows the Freelander 2 to be permanent 4 wheel drive with the bonus of being a 'part time' system when not needed.
The Freelander 1 used a Haldex system that was reactive and needed wheel slip to operate, whereas the 2006/7 Freelander 2 is pro-active and with it's sensors can lock up before slippage can occur. In 2009 Freelander 2's went to another generation of Haldex that is faster still in transmitting torque to the rear and individual wheels,

The torque between front and back wheels is infinitely variable and if conditions wanted it, it could switch 100% torque to the rear but under normal conditions it is biased 90-95% towards a front wheel drive. It is an 'on demand' system that will put the full torque where needed within 150ms.

The Terrain Response programs pre-set the front/rear torque and adjusts as it sees fit.
