The whining power steering pump problem - Best Approach

My 2007 FL2 has just (at 30,000 miles) started to produce the worrying whine in the power steering pump that has been well-reported here. It is obviously well out of warranty, but my independent garage who do my servicing reckon I should nevertheless approach Land Rover to get some or all of the repair paid for by them as the part[s] are not of merchantable quality.

This could obviously be an uphill struggle, but what do folks here think is my best route:-

1) To see if I can get an agreement direct from Land Rover UK and then approach a Land Rover Dealer to do the repair or

2) Put the car into a Land Rover Dealer in the hope they will negotiate a deal with Land Rover UK?

Are there any other routes I could try?

Also, advice seems to be that it could be dangerous to drive the car in this condition - any thoughts on that?

Try a LR dealer for a start and see what they suggest.
If the power steering pump was to pack up totally you wouldnt loose all the steering, it would just make it much harder to turn the wheel, try turning the steering wheel while pushing the car with the engine off and you can see how much harder it would be.

I would contact customer care but I realy doubt you will get anything out of them. Has your car had a fully serviced by lr? if so you may get a small controbution but dont exspect more than 33% and thats if your lucky.most people get nothing. Guess you got to way up the cheapest option. LR independant

Thanks Mona Geeza - am now thinking of getting my independent garage to put it into LR themselves and get a view back which they can "translate" for me.

Point taken about the steering - if it suddenly failed going round a corner at 50, it wouldn't be a fun experience I'm guessing, even if there was some steering remaining! Sad

Steering will only be very stiff at low speeds.

Thanks too superspark - no, it hasn't been fully serviced totally by LR, so I'm sure that will count against me. Although if it's the common problem it seems to be and if it's something like the bearings going because the reservoir filter mesh was inadequate and letting in dirt as reported here, then the argument about who serviced it doesn't quite stack up .

Yes - seems to be the case. But so unfair for what looks like a basic design fault.

Will contact customer care as you suggest, but we're now thinking of first getting our independent garage to put it into an LR dealer and get a view on what they think needs doing - and then take it from there.

I think the cost of a re-con pump and reservoir from LR are about £120, so it's probably going to be cheaper to get those parts and let my local guy put it in.

I think the parts are a lot more than that! And you need to do the rack if your doing the pump! I had no joy with my 2007 and lr customer service/care!

A recon pump from landrover is about £107 plus vat plus deposite and the rack "recon" is between £240 and £270 plus vat plus £100 deposite refundable on surrendering your old one depending on where you purchase it. The oil resivour is about £10 hope this helps

That's what LR Guildford Spares quoted my garage, but guess we'll find out for sure when the car goes in! Sad

Oh, I thought it only needed doing if there was a knocking noise from the rack, but on reading further it all looks inter-linked (I now read that welding spatter on the rack can break off causing air in the pump). The full job with the rack will be near £1,000+ from an LR dealer by the looks of it. Sad

Thanks again superspark - yes that's definitely helpful - I didn't have the rack price before.

I guess all these recon parts are around because there has been a general problem with the original ones?!

I have steering problems again so Im not letting them loose on it again. I have just purchased a new rack,pump,oil resivour and oil and will carry out the work myself. I have all the tools needed the know how and workshop manuals,will save myself a lot of money and will know the job has been carried out properly.
My faith in the dreaded has been greatly dented on past dealings.

I'm impressed! It's beyond my capabilities, but I put my trust in my local garage who I've dealt with for over 10 years now with a variety of cars and will get them to do what you are doing - unless LR decide to cough up some cash to do it themselves (unlikely)!

Ive worked on cars ever since I was a small boy as my father was a machanic well marine engineer pretty much the same so there not much I cant do. All the best with yours and hopfully LR might cough up some doe, let us know the outcome as its all info for everyone else on here Thumbs Up

Not having you car serviced by a L/R main dealer will certainly go against you.
I just had the aircon compressor replaced on my 08 and L/R customer service got me 33% but only after they'd checked the service history of the car.

I also had the power steering whine and stopped using the car immediately to prevent further damage. A new reservoir and a flush sorted it and it fine now. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.
