I read all the messages above; but I didn't find out if you refer to imperial gallon or to U.S. gallon.
I'm from Italy and I don't know which measerure unit you use in the UK; I think the imperial gallon, but i'm not sure, and the difference is significative.
Example:

30 (mile per Imperial gallon) = 10.6201813 kilometers per liter

30 (mile per US gallon) = 12.7543112 kilometers per liter


ps: google can be used as calculator to translate values.

or
30 (mile per US gallon)
in the google search box, when you click the search button, google does the calc for you.

You can be sure that all UK contributors are referring to imperial gallons not US gallons.

Of course the UK switched to metric measurements for fuel, several decades ago, and we all purchase fuel in litres. However our road signs still show miles rather than kilometers, and our speedometers show mph rather than kph. A somewhat classic UK muddle really; resulting in us hanging on to quoting a vehicle's mpg rather than kpltr.  Life is not a dress rehearsal!
