New Glow plugs fitted

Got round to changing my glow plugs today, a what a job to do!! They are probably in the hardest place to get in the whole engine! Here are a couple of pics anyway...... Hopefully will start better now, I tested the old plugs to and 3 are faulty. So worth doing

The inlet manifold has to be reoved to access and fuel filter removed

Was it difficult to change them? How did you test the old ones and realized that they are faulty?

I had mine replaced as well. Two were dead and the remaining two got the car running with -23c. The originals used by Land Rover are NGK 4966-s but beru etc also make suitable ones. They cost about 13-15 on ebay.

Simplest way to test them is to measure resistance with a simple multimeter.

Replacement was to much for me, in order to do so one has to remove the intake to gain access to the plugs.
Dealership quoted 135€ for the replacement but the local garage did it for 70€

easy way to test glow plugs take off terminal wires at the end of the plugs get a 12v test lamp /screwdriver type connect the crocodile end of the tester to the posertive terminal on the battery and touch the center terminal on the glow plug if the lamp lights up Idea its ok if it dosent light up its faulty and needs replacing Thumbs Up rainy-city

The glow plugs are very difficult to access and takes about 1.5hrs to strip the engine down to get to them, so if you have gone to that much effort to test them you may as well replace them. They cost about £30, but you also need to replace some gaskets which cost around £13.

Do you have part numbers for the gaskets or other such items which needed replacing?

Was the stripdown straightforwards or were there any tricky bits?

This is a job I've been psyching myself up to do on our car and the cold weather combined with your photos may just kick me into doing it.

Hi!
Mine had difficultly in starting this morning at -1 deg. Is this a symptom of dead glow plugs? In the old days there was a button to press foe manually heating the plugs, I take it there’s no similar operation now??
Any thoughts?
Regards

Quite a few threads on here. The glow plug operation is supposed to be automatic, with a delay before cranking starts at lower temperatures. Mine (07) doesn't seem to have that delay - I'm about to get dealer to check it.

Will do - it's going in to Marshalls on Monday. There may be a software update for the delay. I'm not sure if it's possible to test the actual plugs without dismantling.

Can be tested using a multimeter (resistance mode) without removing.

My first thought on difficult starting at -1 would be the battery rather than the glowplugs. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto
Tricia's - 2006 Royal Blue Beetle Cabriolet Auto
Mine - 2014 Vespa GTS 300 Super Sport Matt Black
Ours - 2007 White Bailey Pageant Champagne
