As far as I know (not too far!) there are only 2 ways of measuring mpg with any accuracy
1. Trip mileage taken after a regular and measured amount of fuel added
2. Fill up and take trip

'Cos I am into Classics, have always used latter measure so I can show all data to person buying (being conned!) and do same on my FL2 also. Following is an extract of Excel SS which anyone can have if wanted:

The mpgs recorded show no resemblance to the 'computer' mpg shown on the dash

Filled up my FL2 TD4 HSE (manual) today, she took 60 litres after 411 miles. I make that 31.13 MPG

This is mostly suburban with the odd spurt of dual carriageway, making full use of HVAC, winter pack for cold starts.

Not too upset with that - damn sight better than my previous (Disco3 auto).

For what its worth, my daily short comute (5m x 2) and round town running tends to be around 29mpg,ie near LR figures, but no matter what I do, I cant touch quoted extra urban figures.

I struggle to clear 35mpg, even on long runs, and keeping at the motorway speed limit.

Could do with swapping with one of you, and see if its the car, or my driving.
In the past,I have generally got within a couple of mpg of published figures.

Just after Christmas spent a few days in North Norfolk with a lot of driving at 50 mph limits (ideal? for best consumption figures). From fill up to fill up I recorded 40.3 mpg, best ever for me and that was really gentle driving

Same here, but I can't seem to get more than 32mpg Big Cry ..............and thats driving very conservatively and not taking the revs above 2000rpm Exclamation

Would love to know whether it's the car or my driving Confused

This is exactly as I would expect. It is impossible as a manufacturer or testing company to cover all the bases, especially as we all drive differently and in different landscapes.

It is like saying "normal" driving...what is normal??

I always do full tank to full tank calculations of consumptions and my calculated figure is normally very close to the computer one. Normally I get around 36 / 37 for my mix of A roads and busy motorway driving (27 mile commute, so plenty of time to get up to temperature). But last weekend we went away to North Wales and didn`t rush round, but did quite a few hills, as you can imagine, and clocked 40.1 on the computer, 66.1 litres for 583 miles, which equals 40.1mpg. Was trying to get 600 miles off one tankful, but bottled out at a predicted 2 miles range displayed! Don`t drive faster than your angel can fly!

Same here with full to full but in my post above showing 40 mpg the trip computer showed 34! In all my fill ups since November, computer results are significantly under-stating.

interesting!

That's interesting Sam, I have assumed so far that the computer was recording fairly accurate average mpgs, backed up by comments from several other forum members.

Maybe I should try and keep manaul records for a bit too!?

Hi Dave,

I've done a few long trips on mine - typically 37 - 38 @70 on cruise control. Best seen was 39. Grumpy

Well, just returned from a trip to Selkirk and am happy to report that if I drive at the motorway speed limit, my average fuel consumption back to Aberdeen was 38mpg Thumbs Up

So, it just proves that if you can stick to the "legal" speed limit, a fairly decent mpg is possible. Obviously my poor mpg before this was as I now know was due to my heavy right foot.

Also found that using the cruise control increases fuel consumption quite a bit........phew....thought it was my driving Rolling with laughter ______________________

Just back from a run from Stirling to Aviemore and back and like Dave for some reason I have had abnormally low fuel consumption today...................... brimmed the tank at Stirling with Shell regular and after 220miles round trip the average is showing 35mpg, which seeing as I didn't hang around is pretty good for a 3.6ltr V8!

BTW I think just about all the Freel2's produced were out on the A9 today, never seen so many in one day. How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

Wish mine was on the A9 or on any road that took me to Aviemore
