Starter motor

Has anyone used one of these starter motor repair kits that are on e-bay? or any comments! (Item eBay Item No. 250971770599).

Yes I have but it was on my TD5 Defender.......however I guess it is the same principle. Basically I found the comments in the ad to be very accurate. The copper contacts on my starter were indeed burnt and the starter was only working intermittently (the dreaded "click" then nothing). Having stripped the thing down it was evident that the contacts were the weak link and the rest of the motor was fine. Once fitted with the new contacts the motor worked perfectly.

An easy, effective and cheap fix for an otherwise expensive problem. It's got my vote.

PS Before you go taking the starter out, make sure you have plenty of amps arriving at the starter motor and a good earth otherwise it can give the same symptoms of clicking and no turn! John

Thanks,
Not getting the solnoid clicking yet but motor does sometimes turn over slower than normal, the battery is good (new) but need to check the cables still, but as said it is only occational at the moment so hope it lasts till the better weather.

If the motor is turning over slower than it should, this is not a solenoid contact problem. You are right in checking cables/connections first. The battery may seem OK but are you sure? If not, get it tested - should be free to get it done. John

New battery fitted at xmas as battery was not holding charge and the starter was slow before that, so maybe connections!
