I think that the problem you have up there is Alex Salmonds like most politicians is more interested in himself than he is in Scotland, and the objective is about him, not what is good for his country and /or the UK his attitude reminds me a lot of the way Tony B-Liar treated us all with Europe knowing better than his electorate. If it's true what I've read in the paper about letting 16 year olds vote, you have my comisserations imagine letting your average teenager make a decison that could make or break the financial standing of a nation 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

my sentiments exactly,

but the problem is that there are masses of numpties up here who don't actually know what "independence " means,

and that is why it is so important that the wording of the question on the voting paper is correct.

Oh don't get me started

..and the same masses of numpties base their emotions on very selective history of 300 years ago.
Tell someone that there were just as many Scots on the English side at Culloden and they won't believe you (but it's more or less true for what I understand). Not to mention that Scots, English, Welsh and Northern Irish all fought and died together in 2 world wars (and all the others) in the last 100 years...

As for Alex Salmond, people voted for SNP because he's actually a good politician (as far as they go) and the alternatives are pish. I doubt many actually voted for them with any expectation that one day there might be independence

The proposal to allow 16 year olds to vote, is nothing more than a very cleaver political maneuver. By the time the referendum takes place, those that are currently 16 will be 18, Salmond is simply attempting to capture all those votes now by appearing to respect the view of the young and inexperienced.

I do however have to respect the action he has taken personally to deal with obesity in Scotland.
Eating all the pies is a selfless act. Wink

Iain,
I think one of the problems is we don’t hear from the average person in the street like youself. Can you imagine the problem this could cause, who would defend Scotland, what would their currency be and worth, would there be an import duty on a Freelander. The questions go on and on but this Politian just appeals to the William Wallace brigade with no thought to the consequences and as MartyB points out for self interests. One suspects that is why he is trying to rig the vote. We are a great country made up of different areas with distinct variations and long may it last.
John. Thumbs Up

Alex Salmond is a very astute individual and a clever politician, almost everything he has done since becoming First Minister has had 2 objectives, the first is to buy the votes of the Scottish electorate and the second to alienate Scotland from the rest of the UK ( especially England ) by making it appear that they are subsidising things for Scotland that they can't have themselves.

Any time he or his colleagues are asked how these things can be paid for without cutbacks elsewhere they respond with derisory comments but never a clear answer.

Mr Salmond and his Nationalists friends also ignore the fact the the Union of the Crowns required the agreement of 2 Parliaments and two groups of citizens so surely it should take the same level of agreement to dissolve the Union.

He may well rant on about the right to self determination of the Scottish people but to do that at the expense of the greater electorate of the UK must surely be wrong as perhaps is his desire to exclude non Scottish residents from the Referendum.

I wonder if that well known non resident Nationalist Sean Connery will buy a house in Scotland just to get a vote of if wee Eck will let him stay in Bute House to prove residency.

Anyway enough of politics, must go and paint my Freely tartan and start my MacLandRover franchise.

Neil

Not funny at all; here is a direct link in this thread Mr. Green

Have you not read that the folk of India, being huge and experienced contributors to devolution and democratic government, have already staked a claim to their Scottish right to vote and have applied to Alex for 6 billion SNP membership cards for the Clan McEverest. It is rumoured that AS chocked on his kedgeree last Sunday morn on receiving the application.

His first response was an emphatic no, that is, until he heard that unless he moved along with the request all LRJ vehicles will be withdrawn by Tata from all Scottish Minister's & SNP fleets. Furthermore, they will refuse to subsidise any steel supplies to Scottish industry, close all Indian restaurants north of the border and ban the import of Mongoose, Kingfisher, Cobra and Bangla beers.

Initial reaction to the beer embargo has led this week to a 99% fall in the support for the SNP among male Scottish voters and (reportedly unconnected to the beer embargo) Alex's gillie has refused point blank to do anymore illegal midnight poaching for the TellyTubby of the Grampians. Shocked
