My Garmin has two options: manually or automatic that kicks in at sunset/sunrise times. |

+1 cannonball by tomtom can also be set to auto change, and this as you say is time rather than light dependant so works fine in cetre cubby and is a perfect fit as well |

I have a Garmin. You can switch to night settings and also adjust the brightness plus opt for automatic night settings which I use so it blends in well. I can't immediately remember how to change but the usual fiddling with the menus should get to the icon.

My Garmin Quest has 3 backlight settings, OFF, FULL and USER-DEFINED. They are accessed by simple press of the on-off button (turning off is press and hold). In the #user-defined# mode I get a "slider" image on the screen to move between bright and dim.

On the 1390 and 1490 Garmins go to 'tools' from the main screen, 'settings', and then 'display'. This allows you to change night and day settings plus overall screen brightness. |

BTW: If you are after egipp's flush mounted look, then don't purchase the Nuvi 2000 series as the surround is all one piece and doesn't come off separately to the main houseing.
