England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Baltic Blue

Very interesting Neil, a few of us from the forum attended an event in Chesterfield last week where SY Police were handing out DNA kits for marking vehicles and parts along with stickers, hopefully this will be sufficient to deter potential theft of marked vehicles in the future. Gone, 2007 TD4 SE Auto Baltic blue, clear side repeaters, full sized alloy spare.

English by birth..... Yorkshire by the grace of God.

Typical Tykes, it won't be long before I live in Very West Yorkshire Laughing

More police forces should take the initiative though, just doing bits here and there simply moves the problem round, although its a start Thumbs Up

Its better than doing nothing but as most stolen LRs are being shipped out to certain european countries I dont think that it will do alot of good unfortunatly but putting an explosive device in the fuel tank of a bait car (with a 48 day fuse) will help pinpoint where they are going to Twisted Evil

Ghylie, that's a cracking idea, a bit like the remote wipe feature on iPads and phones. Laughing

Hmmnnn ... having read the article & the modus operandi, does anyone still leave car keys downstairs?

All our car keys and neighbours' keys are kept upstairs & well out of sight in our bedrooms, so they've got to get past us first!

With the advent of such greater security systems on cars themselves, this first started as reaching through letter boxes & open windows to fish out visible keys ... breaking in seems just a "progression", though far far more worrying & intrusive for the poor owners!

I leave keys downstairs in full view on a Land Rover key fob. However, they are not the right keys/remote for the car and won't operate anything I know of....just me being awkward and liking the idea of Censored off a pikey! Twisted Evil John

All my spare keys are kept in the safe and the key I use plus house key, wallet and cellphone are kept in a drawer in my bedroom overnight, the problem is no one knows how much force can be used against an intruder, the householder often ends up in court and the intruder gets a slap on the legs.
British justice?????. Gone, 2007 TD4 SE Auto Baltic blue, clear side repeaters, full sized alloy spare.

The pendulum has started swinging back though now. The force used against the intruder would need to be proportionate to the attack. So if they broke in and squirted a water gun at you (unlikely I know Laughing ) then smashing their heads in would get you into trouble.

However, there was that very recent incident where youths broke into a house and one had a machete. The owner managed to get the machete in a struggle and stabbed the youth who then died. The CPS did not bring any action against the man. The mens rea needed for murder is intention to kill or cause GBH and he had neither. CPS deemed it self defence. http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/260562

The problem Tony Martin had in that famous case was shooting them in the back after they had left and were running away. The threat had passed. If he blew them away in the house whilst they were on the offensive, the outcome could well have been much different in the hands of a good barrister.
