Where is the DPF?

I was reading an article on the new Euro5 Defender and it explained that the DPF had been placed next to the engine, in the engine bay so that it ran hot and could regenerate, also it was well out of the way of getting damaged.
Anyone know where the DPF is on the FL2.

the dpf on fl2 is the first pipe connected to the exhaust manifold it is put there because it is the only place where the dpf can get enough heat from the engine to start the re-gen process it will look like an extra exhaust box Thumbs Up rainy-city

very interesting info, ( thanks Alex ) I didn't realise what was involved in the DPF operation.

really glad I don't have one !! and now would make me think twice about buying a vehicle with a DPF.

Nope, I can confirm the parts are in the exact place they were 4-5 years ago. When a noise was being investigated on mine and microphones being attached in various places, the heatshields were removed and there it was, the DPF still after the Catalyser which is still nearest the manifold.

Maybe the part number or some components like the differential pressure sensor or the temperature sensor, but the location along the exhaust line, I don't think so.

hi

if it is in the same place and the same shape then if there is a problem with it, it should be straight forward to remove and drill a 2-3" hole all the way through, that should stop the sucker from blocking up

as has been done here

anyone want to try it? 1995 P38 now dead

With that hole the difference in pressure between input and output of the DPF will be 0 and therefore the engine's ECU will signal an error.
Maybe with also a little tweak on the differential pressure sensor downstream input, in order to create that pressure differential, will work.
For sure that will be some that will try, but this in a few years, after the cars will be out of warranty...

Welcome to the wonderful world of DPF on FL2! I can assure you that meddling with pressure sensors will sonner or later cause the same 'DPF-full' & 'Reduced Engine Performance' messages. You can't fool the ECU because apart from clogging degree / pressure difference it also monitors the milage and counts cold engine starts (BMWs and Audis, for instance, measure only clogging). At latest after driving 850 km the ECU will assume that the filter is full and send the engine into limp mode and the whole enterprise would be in vain. German FL2 forum member have longstanding experience with the way how this thing called DPF functions on FL2. There were various ingenious methods tried out but none of them worked in the end. Premium diesel and C1-Norm-engine oil or high-revs driving mitigate slightly the problem but don't solve it completely. At first, service station will change the pressure sensors, then they will try diffrent measures to seal off the exaust system. The manual-box FL2s are more prone to DPF problems than automatic version. But once the problem starts it will likely haunt you till you sell your car Smile And it is not true that other brands are equally susceptible to the DPF problems as FL2. For Germany the FL2 is a niche-product with relatively small numbers sold. Nevertheless, the DPF-thread is the longest in the forum, comprising more than 150 pages. While admitting that other makes also have DPF problems I could not find an internet-forum related to any other big German brands, where DPF problems are present at such scale as in FL2-forum.
