Interior lights problem -footwell lights

Help ! I have the 56 plate gs and it has mountings for footwell lights, but has only one wire to the passenger side bulb holder ! Insane ! So anyway, I assumed this is the power feed and install an earth wire to the empty terminal, but this happens- when the interior lights are on, the light goes off- when the interior lights go out, it comes on dimly! Any clues anyone? Zermatt '57 Silver Freelander 2 GS -

I have connected the missing wire from the bulb to fuse 17 in the passenger footwell and all is well - light works fine. Tricky part is getting the feed over to the drivers side! Zermatt '57 Silver Freelander 2 GS -
