If I may add a little something to this thread. I used to work with an old time mechanic who after the war was asked to get cars started again because of the time they were laid up and engines seizing. Initially he said he used to remove the head and do a de coke on the valves then re assemble. He was put on to a product one can still buy I believe called Redex. So instead if doing an engine strip down he poured redex down the spark plug holes, left it to soak in for 48 hours then start easing the engine on a starting handle.

Ever since then he has always added a couple of bottle cap full eveytime he filled up with petrol and it stops the carbon deposition on the valve stems.

So if your thinking of putting an addative in your engine maybe a look at what Redex can do may help, as they now do it for diesels as well. By the way I have absolutely no connection with the named product other than to buy it the same as any other motorist.

I like the analogy, but all fuel is produced to a certain specification, I grant you some could be better than others, but arn't we being a bit anal about it?.

Scotland 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Fuji White

The only station in town is Esso and is always 8-10p per litre dearer than supermarkets or major brands, hence I fill when in nearest main town some 22 miles away. Usually Tesco or Shell.
The nearest BP with Ultimate is 28 miles but if heading north and tank is well down I fill with Ultimate.
I don't remember exact figures but on a 500 mile round trip on Ultimate I reckoned it was about even extra cost = improved mpg.
Have not tried it in new SD but will post soon. All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone
FL2 GS Auto SD with heated leather, factory tints, alloy spare and a few other bits.

England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Tonga Green

I've filled up the last few tank fulls with Shell Fuel Save Diesel.

I drove from Sunderland to Middlesbrough and back the other evening (the very windy evening - passed a truck on its side and others parked on the hard shoulder!)

The FL2 seemed to be not pulling too well - I immediately thought something was going wrong.....

Got back to Sunderland and filled up with Shell V-Power diesel

and what a difference I noticed straight away - pulled much better and smoother sounding Thumbs Up

Not sure whether Fuelsave with a dash of 2Stroke would have been the same Confused 2002 Honda VFR800

England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Baltic Blue

I have been following this thread with interest and decided to give the super Diesel a try, only had a couple if half tanks yet but the performance seems better but not noticed any improvement in economy but that could be a consequence of the perceived better performance, used Total Excellium not sure if it's better or worse than V power and Ultimate or not.
Just turned over 100K miles, have I left it too late to see any real benefit?. Gone, 2007 TD4 SE Auto Baltic blue, clear side repeaters, full sized alloy spare.

English by birth..... Yorkshire by the grace of God.

United Kingdom 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Zermatt Silver

As I think I've posted before anyone who has fully expensed fuel on my employers company car scheme is limited to the ordinary diesel, someone with more brains than me has worked out ( probably the fuel company card issuer who log mileage and purchases) that there is no real cash benefit over a vehicle lifetime in using it. To be honest 95% of our fleet is diesel and they get changed at 4 years or 80,000 miles and you never hear of an engine problem. So our Freelander gets Sainbury's and when there is a 10p a litre off coupon that beats any mileage improvement you may or may not get with super fuels. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
