I already have answered it! The auto is more jerky because of the very nature of autos i.e kick down! Even the LR day conceded that kickdown does jolt you. I can select the perfect gear and stamp on the throttle if I so wish and the power delivery is smooth and refined. You need to be more delicate with the auto or it jolts you. The manual change down is perfectly smooth and the reason for this is because the driver is in control. The auto as the LR day guy mentioned drops 2 gears on full kickdown hence the jerking. The FL1 manual was far less powerful and even slower than the FL2 manual and I prefer that gearbox to the FL2 auto.

The bottom line is that it is all down to personal choice, I have driven both and prefer the auto. For those that go on about having more control I presume you also long for manual chokes and the ignition advance and retard on the steering wheel, also we can do away with climate control, we are all capable of turning the heater up or down.

The auto box features a skip shift scheduling strategy which controls 4 clutches simultaneously. The units have the ability and programming for 2-4; 4-6 upshifts and 6-2, 2-1, 5-3, 3-1, 4-2 and 2-1 downshifts. This is accomplished by designing a compact hydraulic circuit that remains pre-charged. So, you see, it can change down even 4 gears, 6-2. |

It still does not answer which is the better box, just because it jerks on kick down, which incidentally is not two gears, it will be the lowest available.

The TARDIS hasn't got a gearbox and the only thing that's laughable is people trying to argue the manual is jerky. I know which gear is best for which speed and never have to drop 2 gears quickly. The auto is terrible and I have driven many and for lengthy periods of time. The developments in technology leaning towards autos is a sad day for people who prefer superior manual boxes. No matter how many advances there are, the manual is better and I will never change. I will go on the bus before buying an FL2 auto or FL3 auto assuming there will be an FL3. Yes but I won't be driving it. Perhaps walking would be the other option. Anything except driving the hideous auto. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby LOT (Lord of Time) - University of Gallifrey |
