On Sunday lunchtime, my neighbour was using his jackhammer in readyness for some building footings within 20ft of our door. He thought we were out as my car was wasn't parked. I was out but er indoors was still in the house.
It was an almighty dim.
Upon my return i vented my feelings in no uncertain terms, but he still didn't see he'd done any wrong as he thought we were out.

I thought Sunday was a day of rest and no building work/noise was allowed.
I'm really upset by this; i wouldn't do that sort of thing to my wosrt enemy, seems i've got one now.
Despite my protests, i'm sure he'll do the same again. Common sense and respect for other others doesn't seem to exist.

I hate falling out with people as that also upsets me.
Anyone any idea of what course of action i should take if the incident happens again?

hi peg leg if the noise is after 7am and finishes before 10pm there is not mutch you can do i would try your local council noise abatement team for advice if he is putting footings in has he got planning permission or does he need it may be your planning office at the council may help  rainy-city

In Germany no garden work/noisy stuff is allowed on Sundays (I think), In England I think you can do as you please.

Best way is to liaise with the fellow and try and organise his noisiest work to happen when your out, the sooner he gets on the sooner he will finish I guess.

We have a very noisy stunt pilot in an extreme arobatic russian plane who spends all summer practising in the skies above us, drives everyone mad but apparently there is nothing that can be done , I however am organising a whip round for an anti aircraft missile.
The noisy prat even teases us doing rapid vertical climbs until his engine seems to die and go quiet he then nose dives toward the earth, we all watch thinking/hoping he is crashing then miraculously his engine sputters back into life  At work

Sounds like you've upset your neighbour for no reason, can't really wrap those tools up in cotton wool can you.
If he's putting in footings for buildings then more than likely he would need planning permission in which case you would have received a letter from the planning department of the local council giving notice of his intentions and your right to object.

An apology would be my advise. You never know in future years you might need building work done. Kicking up a fuss with your neighbour could put any future plans you might have in jeopardy.

In this country it is a 'suggestion' by local authorities of no noisy work on Sundays and Bank Holidays for commercial and Industrial works.
DIY have no limitations but it would have been neighbourly for him to knock on your door and give 'notice' so to speak, then arrange a suitable time if possible.

Fantastic , send him over my house , never get fed up with this. Our local guy only seems to fly once or twice a year

I don't think you can do much, I girl I work with had the builders working something like the 7-10pm as above 7 days a week to get a project finished on a house behind her.

I recall something that you can approach a planning department to ask them to stipulate the hours of work

Not sure if you can do much in reality, my BIL throws parties with live bands in his back garden each year, from 11pm its music off outside and into his soundproofed rear extension till the early hours, his ex council and knows nothing can really be done if the noise is below a set level outside after a certain time. Obviously a bit different to yours

We only get noise for half the year
Winter is dead quiet here and the snow acts as sound proofer so we hardly hear the cars and its so cold nobody goes outside, nobody has garden parties, nobody cuts grass with noisy lawn mowers and there are no early singing birds to wake you up at 5am.

if the building work is to be done then no option but to use the proper tools which do tend to be noisy.

really need to come to some mutual agreement with your neighbour re the noisiest parts and when these should be done.

sounds like you have over reacted a bit ( perhaps you don't want the building work done at all ?? )

I would try and pacify things a bit and maybe eat a wee bit of humble pie !!

On the other hand he could have given you prior warning then you could both have agreed a convenient time.
