Still coming across nice thoughtful touches on my 2010 TD4e HSE.

Used to own an earlier generation '53 plate VW Passat estate. Great car barring a demented feature whereby leaves were bound to eventually block two crucial drainage channels leading to water overflowing the bullhead from the engine side only to descend on & flood a crucial ecu sitting under the front passenger's feet below the semi-moulded carpet. This ecu controls door locking & the alarm system, so you can imagine the consequences as the alarm goes off randomly & frequently, esp. at say 3 am!

Coming to the Freelander 2, like every vehicle since that Passat, what do I find? An exquisitely designed channelling with at the end on each side a rubber flap to hold the leaves at bay until you have time to lift the flap and clear them away along with any other detritus.

The same thing happens on Volvo V70's (2000-2007). Weird electrical faults point to the failure of either a junction box or ECU (not sure which) at the bulkhead after water has overflowed from the exact same channel after having been blocked with leaves. Repair bill on the Volvo? Around £1200 from a Volvo specialist

I keep the gutter scrupulously free of leaves on the Freelander, just in case!

One of my least favourite subjects.
Lots of cars have the same problem; Rover 75 plenum would fill up with water due to leaves blocking drain holes and leave a tide mark on the ECU. Oh, then it would would grind to a halt. Even Bentley have had electrical problems for the same reason.
Never park your car near trees if possible! Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.
