2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Zermatt Silver
Black gunk in tube from air filter

Am new to this forum so apologies if this has been asked before.

I have a late 2007 FL2 GS TD4 which has done 45k miles.

Recently there has been an annoying smell of burning oil entering the cabin on hard acceleration and when slowing dwon. I think I have tracked this down to some oil like substance oozing out of the air filter to engine pipe. This is coming from the joint at the left side (looking from front) of the engine which is after the connection to what, I presume, is the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) inlet to the air intake. Indeed when I took the pipe off to clean it out then there was no "gunk" to the air filter side of that connection. Note that the whole set of intake pipes were taken off due to a incorrect "fueling" problem (!) and then put back. It is possible they were not seated correctly allowing the gunk to drip onto the hot engine and cause the smell. I have since taken them all off and made sure they are seated correctly.

So the question is .. is the gunk simply a by product of the EGR system and/or do I need to do anything to rectify this. I know that on a number of other vehicles that the EGR is ofen blanked off .. is this an option too ?

Denis

Hi Patters. Welcome to the forum.

It does sound like fumes from the engine breather system venting out. As it is supposed to be a closed system this shouldn't happen. Also have a look at the back of the engine on the left hand side, just under the cylindrical air intake pipe. If it looks damp with diesel fuel, it could be that the injectors are leaking slightly. Mine did this and I was getting exhaust fume smells in the cabin when stationary. my injectors were replaced under warranty and it cured the problem.
There was a post on the forum about EGRs, and the advice was NOT to remove it or blank it off. Alex will be able to tell you why, I'm sure.

Russ. Poke it, Poke it, make it do it again!!

Thanks for the response,

There was definately oil in the filter pipe, but at least one of the tubes to the injectors were taken off when the unleaded fuel was drained out. Maybe there is a combination of things going on. I'll get it checked over

Oops!! Embarassed

Maybe one of the mechanics connected something wrong when refitting the breathers? Or it could be simply a leaking connection. Poke it, Poke it, make it do it again!!

Wow this sounds exactly the problem. The "jubille" clip is perhaps not tight enough as it has been taken off by pinching with a set of mole grips. Is the connection simply the 2 plastic pipes and the clip or is there supposed to be some sort of gasket between the two ? How exactly is it best to seal or should I nip it into the LR dealer ?

Cheers

Denis

From what I can see it is just a push fit with the 'jubilee' clip holding it. I don't think there is any sealant in there. You could try a screw type 'jubliee' clip to tighten the joint. Poke it, Poke it, make it do it again!!
