Turbo whistle fix - Steering Grommet missing

After 8months of unsatisfactory turbo whistle intrusion into the cabin, I can announce there is a fix.
So ask your dealer or take your whistler to TVLR.
They replace the steering column seal and the irritating noise that has plagued many for months will disappear.
Congrats to the engineers at LR.

Shocked good to hear you have it sorted, was it TVLR that found the problem or LR themselves

There is no truth in the rumour it was the driver of a Disco4 whe recently had severe ear bashing at an LR Experience Centre who urged LR to get it sorted Whistle

Toeknee,
All TVLRs fine work. It is a really excellent fix, that can be done while you wait!

Good to know. It has been irritating me since the FL is otherwise a great vehicle. Will get this done at first service in a couple of months.

thought i would bring this thread back to life...

Had my car under 2 weeks now and the turbo whistle is very loud. It was most noticable on the motorway at 70mph with the cruise control on. As soon as I hit an incline and the engine was under more load, the turbo would spin up and sing its merry whistle.

Took it to the dealers today. Advised them about this steering column seal, but they took all the turbo pipes off and couldn't find a fault...

Drove it home and suprise suprise its still whistling. So thought I would try your solution of stuffing the hole with a cloth around the steering wheel seal - drove off and silence. 2000rpm and i really had to listen hard to hear the turbo. I am shocked at what a simple fix this is...

Back off to the dealers on Monday to get them to change this seal...

Good find on this one, now i just need to convince the dealer that is the solution

Interesting post.

I've got used to the turbo whistle in my fl2 which was never loud enough in the cabin to cause concern. With the windows down, its very noticeable under acceleration.

I'm more concerned about the amount of engine noise which makes it way into the cabin. I've driven a handful of FL2 courtesy cars when mines been at the garage for service or repairs and some were as noisy but a couple were much quieter.

I'm going to try a cloth around the steering column seal to see if it makes any difference. Wonder if the LR would consider replacing the seal if a cloth does make it significantly quieter, or more likely to refuse saying it was within design tolerances.

I've been testing the difference between the cloth and no cloth all weekend...

The difference is massive... You can only hear the engine when driving and not the annoying turbo whistle... Open the window and the noise returns (which is as expected)

My car is booked into the dealers but they want to keep the car for 2 days. I have explained how i can resolve the issue, i even gave them the part number that fixed the issue LR030346. The part is £13 but they want to investigate all possibilities because they have never heard of just replacing the steering column seal will fix this...

So i can confirm, the dealers DON'T speak to each other...
