+1 you should always look behind as well and try and give yourself just as much space... think of an imaginary bubble extending x number of cars in front and y number of cars behind. The aim of the game is to keep a balance between x and y. if y is less than x then you should slow so that you increase x and keep the gap the same (if that makes sense) Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints |

Couldn't agree more, but wife spends more time worrying about drivers behind her than those in front. If we all worry about what's happening in front, someone else will be covering our arses 2008 FL2 TD4 XS Zermatt Silver, Manual

I live just down the road from this disaster site. The Rugby Club are now the centre of the police investigation regarding the smoke that is alleged to have drifted over the M5 from the firework display. However, smoke or fog it seems the old motorway madness is still with us. People who were close to the crash said it was sickening to hear cars just ploughing into the back of the smash at 60-70mph.

Interesting point Dave but I would like to see such people get a comeuppance at the hands of the law rather than have the error of their ways demonstrated in such horrific and tragic circumstances. As stupid as they are I hope the only accident they ever have is one that involves them only and no other people or property and no serious injuries just enough to give them a wake up call and wipe the smirk off their stupid faces.

Whether the bonfire/fireworks was the cause we'll have to wait and see.

If drivers were in the correct lane, then Audi or Mondeo man could not undertake, lane one for driving, 2 and 3 for overtaking. You tend to hear more and more the someone was undertaken on he Motorway, if drivers today had correct lane discipline then they would not get undertaken, to many train drivers on the motorways. |

In Germany it is forbidden to have any bonfire, fireworks, pyrotechnics etc within 500m of any Autobahn. Maybe a similar rule in this country would be a good idea? |

But if you were leaving 3 or 4 car lengths to be safe from the car in front whilst passing an artic lorry and just ahead of that lorry there was another artic lorry which meant it would not be worth pulling back then mondeo man and co would still charge down the inside even with only a few feet to spare just to get into the gap. In any case, a common occurrence is when you leave a safe gap between you and the car in front whilst approaching a slip road and some idiot waits until you are past the 100 yard marker and charges down the outside before pulling into the gap at crazy speeds and then having to slam the brakes on before he smacks into the car in front. Our local cricket club bonfire position is inspected by the correct authority every year. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice. |

and attitude !! which is by far the most dangerous aspect of driving nowadays, and unfortunately is the underlying cause of many accidents, but never shows itself as evidence after the event. Iain |
