Is this normal? Can I improve by having the ECU tweeked? More interested in economy than speed.
What Car stated the new Freelander as averaging 40 mpg. Offset your Carbon emissions by boycotting Baked Beans and all Green Vegitables.

You are unlikely to match the offical figures which are obtained in pretty sterile conditions in a vehicle specially prepared to obtain the best possible mpg.
26 mpg is a bit on the low side even for a 57 plate 160 bhp diesel - i'd be hoping for something around the low 30's but it does depend on what type of roads you are driving on. Longer journeys on A roads/motorways at a constant speed will give a better mpg than short journeys around town.

My 07 plate 160 bhp manual was doing 34-35 mpg after 36000 miles.
My 60 plate 150 bhp manual is currently returning 39 mpg after 10800 miles. It's going in for its first service tomorrow so will be interesting to see what happens to mpg when it comes out.

Hi, just a few weeks experience but Auto GS 2009 , on Urban runs long enough to get the engine warm and with light right foot, never exceeding the speed limit and never kicking down I've averaged 33 mpg ( according to the computer), on the other hand over a full tank of very short stop start runs my Mrs is getting as low as 24 MPG. on a full tank to full tank calculation of mixed driving 60% short local hops and 40% rapid A road and motorway using sport mode occasionally i reckoned at 28mpg. so I think you are pretty much on the money. 28mpg co-incidently is the same mpg we got from the Defender 300 tdi so we are happy-ish ( when It cost me £94 to fill her car up that did make me wince )

My company motor see below returned 50.1 mpg the other week on a round trip of 450 miles on motorway cruising at 70 - 85 mph ! so I suppose it's horses for courses

My Bike, today returned only 32 mpg from it's 1000cc v twin- riding like a vicar........honest

2008 GS Auto 26mpg, 2010my GS Auto 30mpg , 2011my GS SD190 Auto 35mpg, this showed 42mpg after first 150 miles from South Ayrshire to Oban.
New SD(all SD models are auto) regularly above 40mpg.
Have found sport mode improves fuel consumptionon on 2 way country roads when driving 40-55 mph. This prevents engaging 6th gear at too low speeds then having kickdown opperating more often. All FL2's (3) Gone

My 56 plate se manual regularly gets 38+ on a run, and easily 30+ around town.
Has done 49k. Miles. 

I can't better 28/30 no matter how I drive but am not noted for having a light right foot, what the hell it's a Land Rover so didn't expect good economy. Gone, 2007 TD4 SE Auto Baltic blue, clear side repeaters, full sized alloy spare.

English by birth..... Yorkshire by the grace of God.

on a run I easily get over 42mpg and around town 32ish depending how long I sit idling.

well pleased with economy and just done 15000mls to date.

On a decent run I can easily maintain 40mpg with my 2010 GS manual. However lots of short, 'town' driving can see it drop to 25 - 30mpg.

Just completed 3000miles in my new SD4 and also my first 500 mile tank. OBC recorded exactly 42 mpg for this tankful, which is an actual 38.4 brim to brim. Mainly motorway and A roads. I have to say I am surprised and delighted, especially as it seems to be improving as I put the miles on.

My own 2.2 GS auto would never better 26 mpg. Spent over three years from new going to & fro to the dealer for various issues !
1st I discovered the auto box was pulling away in 2nd ! ( Dealer wasn't sure whether they were meant to pull away in first or 2nd ) I Also found some logged fault codes, even though MIL lamp was never on.
In Frustration I fitted heavy duty earth cable from the neg side of battery to the autobox, and cleared all the fault codes ! went like rocket and MPG improved to 33 overall. But on motorway run at steady 65 it will now return 42.2 mpg over a 340 mile round trip !
I was getting 37-38 in France which from an auto is good but you do need to be light on the gas pedal.

You should have bought a D4 , thats the mpg I'm getting around town  ______________________

MY11 SD4 Auto showed 40.6 average MPG on a leisurely 65mph M62 run from Hull to Liverpool last month, but my usual driving gets me around 34MPG. So I think as stated, it's not normal although MY07 won't be as efficient as the later models, but even so something's not quite right

Even so, I just put more in when it needs it

31.something showing on the computer of my 07 auto over very mixed driving incl. 100mile + motorway and 4mile country road hack for the school run.

I do see it drop more to 28 if just doing school runs, although cold starts (and lots of them) make a massive difference if the engine is not warmed up fully.

I filled mine up the other day having done 400 miles on a tank and with 10miles to empty and it cost £100 . Filled up the Mrs little C1 (which is understatedly cool!! ) with £46 from fumes and it'll do just about 400 miles on a tank  Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints
