Diesel shelf-life

I've got about 30 ltrs of diesel in my garage - just as spare fuel in case of "emergency".

Does anybody know how long it lasts before deteriorating ?

I expect 2-3 months if stored in proper plastic gerry cans..........??

should last a lot longer than that. diesel that I buy for tractors can sit in the farm tank for months over winter never any problems

I have to go with approximately a year or two, in a dark sealed container, that is diesel grade plastic.

that what most people said when i googled it.

Though I did find a website referring to additive to stop it from deteriorating

Are you expecting a fuel shortage in your parts?? Question Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

war?

Has war been declared again or something? Shocked

Why are you all storing any fuel (apart from farm use I mean)? Confused

I have this vague recollection that storing fuel in quantities at home is illegal in the UK anyway; but there again increasingly so are most things!!! Rolling Eyes

no - not expecting a war or fuel shortages.. Thumbs Up

I've got some spare fuel so if I'm on empty - then I don't have to fart around at a garage as the first part of my journey.................. Rolling with laughter

Have used DERVE that was 9 years old in a 1998 Astra with out problems, but it was in a metal tank. Checked with oil depo first and they said it should be ok. usual disclaimers, no guarntees that it will worrk ok in a modern car with tighter tolerances.etc.

I think it would pay to give a can that has been stored for a long time a really good shake up to ensure that if anything has settled out is mixed back in, although it would pay to check that there isn't any water at the bottom of the can first which is pretty difficult unless you have water filling paste or an interface detector. This assumes that your can is a suitable size to shake up - 1000ltr tanks are a bit difficult to shake up!! How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

or you could ...

Maybe another approach would be to always use your spare diesel every 6 - 12 months and fill your spare tank again. Perhaps that's what you do already though! Razz  Life is not a dress rehearsal!

Exactly Thumbs Up

I got my FL2 about 1 month ago - and dreamed about driving thru' Sweden & Norway up to Stavanger where I have a friend - hence taking some spare diesel ! (Plus - it's always useful to have some spare in the garage for an emergency).

Anyway - I go skiing shortly to France & then Italy - so I'll use it then Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

We are worried about being snowed in here in Surrey so I have 60 litres in cans ............ for the deisel generator for when the power goes. I tip it into the FL once in awhile. Probably best to fill the cans in the winter on the basis that anti waxing is added to forecourt fuel in winter . . . . .. . Is it?

Mate in Scotland reckons deisel has a good shelf life - unlike petrol.

Snow tomorrow !!!!!!
