wtd freelander 2 TD4 manual INFORMATION. I have just come over from disco 3. The disco 3 auto was too big and thirsty to use as an everyday car and a caravan puller so it had to go. we loved the disco 3 and are thinking of down sizing to a freel2 does anyone have any clues as to which is best, and how much to pay for one. What kind of mpg can i expect etc etc

If your towing, go for an auto if poss, clutches and DMF's are flaky at best. MPG with 1500kgs behind 23 around tow SWMBO gets 29 to 30 on a run with a light foot 38 is not impossible. Don't underestimate its capabilities as a towcar. As for prices it depends what your limit is. |

If you're looking at new it's worth taking a look at www.landrover.co.uk and the Freelander 2 options and build your own.

I would also recommend the auto for towing. I have towed a Twin Axle van no problem at all 16-1700KGs including all around the Alps. In fact this year we were towing in the Pryrennes and had to stop on a 1-4 section which made my eyes water and was dreading to find out if we could pull away again but did it with ease !

Having just got a SD4 auto from a TD4 auto I can confirm in normal driving I do not notice a difference, although looking at the figures the 0-60 time is 2sec quicker on a SD4. I havn't towed with the SD4 but the old one towed 1500Kgs very well. I prefer the auto as I think it suits the car better. My turbo does whistle and I cannot detect any difference with the adaptive gearbox. Check the seating position suits as lifting the seat flatten the seat cushion so that in the upper position it is almost flat with no thigh support and the limbar support is midway up the seat rather that lower back. As far as I can see the servicing costs are the same as a Disco. In mixed driving I am averaging about 32 wich is only slightly better than the 160bhp TD4. |

Mine is an 08 SE Manual rapidly getting to 80k miles. Have had it since July. I previously owned 3 Passats in succession, two manual, the last a DSG. The Passats had reasonable power but with a 'van on the back you "knew" it was there. With the Freely it tows willingly with no problem. It shrugs off the weight of the 'van (1450kg) and will happily tow in 6th on the level. The gear change is a dream, possibly the best I have owned. I am aware of the clutch/DMF issues experienced by some but have no difficulty at present. Most turbo diesels have a DMF, so it is not a specific LR problem. (The DMF on my second Passat failed at about 85K, having driven it from new) Fuel consumption is about 33-35mpg solo, 27mpg towing.

I went the other way, I moved from a FL2 to a D3 and the mpg was similar but that was coming from a 2007 FL2 to a 2008 D3 so can't comment on the newer FL2.
