Have you had this car from new? It should be a 235/65 R17 108V (where 17" wheels are fitted) on an alloy wheel when specified as an accessory from new, so this one's a bit of an oddball....

we bought the car from a main dealer when it was 5 months old, that was 20 months ago. It was advertised as having a full size spare wheel. We swopped it into our new one on friday as I didn't want a can of foam, I have to admit this is the first time I have looked at it. I didn't realise it wasn't the same width as fitted to the other tyres (235/65 17). |

I think I've read on this forum previously is that because it is a steel wheel the fixings that are normally used with your alloys are not fully compatible - as a result there is a speed restriction on the use of the steel wheel. It is nothing to do with the bit of rubber but actually your nuts/studs whichever it is |

Personally, I wouldn't drive a different diameter wheel at any speed, but it's your new car and your choice.... |

My 08 SE I understand came new with the steel wheel and 225/65/17 Hankook tyre. (still unused). I guess LR must consider the tyre size difference too small to matter for a temporary fit. Nevertheless, when I bought it, I found a spare set of SE wheels on ebay. I use one of those as the spare. The steel wheel is sitting in the shed until p/ex time.... 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

The tyre my be narrower but will be the same rolling circumferance, speed restriction is because steel wheel + alloy nuts.

Not true, the '65' stands for the Aspect Ratio (tyre wall height) and is 65% of the width. Therefore with a narrower tyre the tyre wall height will be less (with the same figure), and the rolling circumference will be less.

True but 41 mm on the circ is nothing, you can get this with worn tyres, but that said its not good and mybe thats another reason LR say for emergancy use only, and a limit of 50 MPH!

I think so as well Richard, I suppose with a worn 'skinny' and a new standard tyre on the same axle the difference could be even greater. I think both the reasons is enough to limit the speed. |

It's a SPARE wheel, not a REPLACEMENT, therefore it is designed to get you out of trouble in an emergency whilst you get the original repaired / replaced ASAP. ______________________
