Autopilot??????

Noticed over past few days Freelander 'goes by itself'
In every gear if I come off the accelerator the car will continue to propel itself even up slight inclines.
Should this happen?
I know in past manual cars ( BMW's) the car would have 'stalled'

I'm only guessing here but maybe the throttle body is sticking, or as the throttle control is electrical, perhaps the motor positioner?

EDIT: I must be blind, only now seen in your sig you have a 2011 model so ignore my wailings Thumbs Up

I would expect it to maintain idle revs on the engine and whatever the equivalent road speed is each gear. Is this what is happening or are the engine revs well above this? There should be plenty of torque to deal with the flat or slight inclines.

When I am driving if I take foot off accelerator car carries on without any significant drop in speed.
Turned into drive to home today- slight incline, put car in 2nd to see what would happen & it went up by itself ( over a speed bump as well) RPM 1000
It will also come up drive in reverse without touching accelerator

Just worried in case this is not 'normal' 2011 XS,Sumatra Black, GONE MARCH 2014- RR Evoque Prestige 5 door ,MY 2014,Loire Blue, Silver Roof, Panoramic roof.

I would say it is completely normal, the car has masses of torque and will quite happily climb on tickover. Modern cars will not make you lurch forward when you take your foot off the throttle, it needs to burn the unburnt gasses for tighter emissions control, the BMW 1 series we have at work is OTT for this and you think it's not going to slow.

Yes, it's normal.
The engine ECU tries to keep the idle speed constant for a specific load range.
If that load range is exceeded only then the engine will, indeed, stall.

PS: The electronic throttle is used only on switching off the engine to prevent the engine shudder and when cleaning/regenerating the DPF to reduce the amount of intake air. During normal functioning, being a diesel engine, the RPM is given/governed only by the amount of injected fuel. The intake path is an open one.

strangely enough I witnessed this yesterday as we were creeping round a new building development looking at plots.

on a steep incline the Freelander went up in second gear with my feet off the pedals and just "idled" up no problem.

next on a very very steep incline it did the same in first gear much to my and my wife's surprise.

I was thinking this would be useful in some offroad situations ??

and again I was wondering if this was normal too.

Iain

ps I also sometimes have felt the car pulling in sixth gear when it shouldn't, and if I dip the clutch the revs are slightly above idle which causes it to "run away", almost immediately it reverts back to idle speed.

doesn't happen a lot, but it can be a bit unsettling !!

It is indeed useful in certain off road situations.

When we were off in Derbyshires lanes The Docs FL2 refused to stall despite some very steep rocky terrain - I thought this was the anti-stall feature of the newer manuals.

Of course those of us with the superior autos have always had this feature Very Happy Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Manuals have also had anti-stall for some time.

i remeber that on one of the l/rover drive days that the instructor said there was an antistall program when i asked what what this did he showed us he took the vehicle up to a slight obstruction with all feet off the control and the car compensated for this and accelerated slightly and went over the obstruction. this is what you might have experanced Question rainy-city

bigalf1961, going up the steep incline I imagine this could be what was happening.

the other part about running away a bit is something else and should not happen.

Sounds an excellent excuse to use on a speed camera appeal, I wasnt speeding gov it was the car.

For fuel economy around town on the flat try 5th gear and take your foot off the off the accelerator at around 25-26mph. The anti-stall keep it going and gives excellent fuel economy; the anti stall even copes with small inclines too Smile
