Hi There. I have been using both keys successfully for last 10months since I got the SD4 new in December. I use the main one 75% of the time, but this morning it wouldn't unlock or lock my car and the console kept spitting it out. Spare is working fine thank god! I have taken it into LR garage near me and they have booked me in for Thursday. The guy who spoke to me said it could be a problem with the remote or the car not charging it. Very worrying as I could easily have been stranded in a car park somewhere. Who take their spare car key out with them day to day?

Has anyone experienced this and as car is only 10 months old should I be claiming this on warranty? To me I see it as a fault rather than wear or tear. Would be useful ammunition for me if anyone has claimed successfully. Otherwise I fear the cost! What do I know....I'm only an Essex girl

should be coverd under warranty you have a three year comprehensive warranty on the vehicle so why should it be not coverd cant say ware and tare only 10 mts old  rainy-city

As far as I understand it:

The fob only needs the charging to do the door lock/unlocking...

When the fob is inserted into the dock that allows the car to start...


The theory is that if the fob battery is flat - you can get in the car using the emergency key and then push the fob into the dock to start the car!

I think the proviso would be that the dock applies power to the fob (ie for charging the battery) and gives it enough power to be able to detect its presence to start up the engine.

If the dash is spitting the key out there must be a fault with the key. Either you've damaged it somehow, in which case warranty should not cover it, or more likely it has an internal fault, in which case it's warranty covered like every other electrical part.

I have had a key fail where it would no longer hold charge to unlock / lock the car but never did it spit the key out.

As said, to start the car it just reads the transponder in the key which should require no power and is programmed to the car. Its only the door locks that need power in the key.

BM's come with a plastic 'valet' key in the glove box which you can use to start the car on those with FL2 style keyless ignition - so you defo dont need power in the fob to be able to start it.

BTW - you should still be able to get in using the emergency key in the passenger door  Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

It is worrying that I couldn't get the car to start as looking at previous posts and what you have all said today, the car should have started and not refused to accept the key in ignition. Happened to the salesman too so it's not me...!
I worry about the same happening to my spare key.... I know I can get in the car (out the rain!) with the metal bit but thats about it!
This is the 2nd fault. It's already been in under warranty at 3,500 miles for a new steering rack! Will let you know what happens after Thursday What do I know....I'm only an Essex girl

Unlikely that it will happen to second key. As stated above, there must be something wrong with the key for the car to reject it.

Well I am back from Lookers in Bishops Stortford. They have fiddled about and have decided to replace "faulty "key - no quibble on warranty and polite service. So thumbs up to them.

I didnt get to speak to whomever tested it but happy with solution. I don't think they know what caused it!

Whilst under manufacturer’s initial warranty I would positively expect things like that to be covered.
Unless you’ve run over it and present it to them in a handful of pieces or dropped it in a bucket of water why wouldn’t it be covered?
