England 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Zermatt Silver
Radio

Can someone please tell me how many different radios there are for the FL2?

I'm looking at the possibility of replacing the radio in our XS, which I believe is the: Hi ICE single disc CD player.

Would a replacement have to come from another XS, or would any of the other models radio also fit, either directly (ideally) or with limited other modifications?

Thanks

EDIT - replacement due to AM problem and for no other reason.

There are three audio options available:
• Standard
• Hi-line
• Premium
The three audio options are derived from two audio systems: Standard and Hi-line/Premium.

The Standard audio system uses an internal amplifier which directly drives the system speakers. It is available with either a single disc or a multi six disc CD player. The Standard audio system is controlled purely from the head unit and the remote steering wheel controls.

The Hi-line/Premium audio system is connected to the MOST network and comprises of the following components:
• Integrated Audio Module (IAM) - with multi six disc CD player, MP3 capability
• Infotainment Control Module (ICM)
• Separate audio amplifier (two variants depending upon Hi-line or premium audio option)
• Rear seat audio control modules with head phone sockets
• Surround sound speaker system
Control of the system is through the ICM located in the center of the instrument panel.

So, you see, you can't exchange a Standard with a Hi-Line/Premium without major modifications.

Wow!! Fantastic and comprehensive response! Many thanks Alex.

Ours is XS spec and has the High Line front end. Does that mean that when looking for a replacement back-end, one from an XS, SE, HSE or HST should be reasonably 'plug-and-play'?

Thanks

Not quite the confident assurance I was hoping for!

EDIT: Not meaning to sound ungrateful, but if you don't know, I'm not sure who will!

Let me put it another way... I can't make assumptions on somebody else's money... Very Happy
The matter should be properly investigated.
In theory, if your front-end is like the one in High-Line picture, then you have installed in the car the MOST bus. So, you can install another system, either High-Line or Premium. In the worst case, the Car Configuration File needs to be updated, if you switch from H/L to Premium.

But if you want to change the radio just because the AM is not working, you should give the dealear a hard time as long as there is a known problem and it isn't because of the way you utilized the radio.
As the SSM states, only the IAM must be changed.

Here is the information about my new IAM, changed on warranty, as the old one had a problem: no AM. Laughing
The old one has an identical label, the only difference is that before the "Made in Thailand" label is written 0805, not 0806 like on this one. I suppose that it's about the firmware version, the old one being with a bug.
And of course, a different, smaller (so older), Serial No. 85127642.
There was no need for any extra work. Just pop out the old one and pop in the new one.

Thanks Alex!

What are the advantages of the Premium to the Hi Line if just swapping the IAM?

Trouble with going to the dealer is that I bought the car privately and it's out of warranty.

Probably the posibility to drive trough the audio amplifier an extra 5 speakers.
But for this, the audio amplifier should also be changed as the Premium audio amplifier has 12 channels, instead of 8 channels for Hi-Line.

Standard: Amplifier inside the head-unit, 4x17W
Hi-Line: Amplifier separately, in the boot, 8x40W
Premium: Amplifier separately, in the boot, 12x40W

The number of channels on H/L and Premium doesn't quite add-up, but this is what the documentation says...
