Low Gear (Auto)

Hi,

I was reading the two's manual last night (Online - I Don't have one. Yet), and noticed that the auto box bit says that it will pull away in 1st or 2nd gear, and if you stop it while in command shift it will drop to 2nd not first.

Does this mean 1st gear is going to be very low for off-road control and towing?

Does anyone know how the gears compare to the freelander 1 (auto and Manual). Did the freelander 1 drop to 2nd not first?

Thanks

Gordon

Can't give you a direct comparison between FL1 and FL2 gearings but I do know for a fact (cause I drove one for 3 years) that the auto FL1 would drop to 2nd and then pull away in 2nd if you were in command-shift mode when you came to stop.

1st gear in the auto FL1s worked well off-road and presumably for towing also -- although towing was never something I used it for. In fact the auto FL1 was an all-round better car than the manual at both off-roading and towing because of the combination of the 1st gear gearing and the auto box.

I understand -- but am not 100% sure -- that 1st gear in manual FL2s is much lower than in manual FL1s in an attempt to improve 1st gear off-road and towing performance in the absence of a low box -- something that was problematic in FL1s.

Cheers, Bill

Auto also has a boost in Fl2, if you accelerate hard for x number of seconds it gives you more power than the manual, although I don't know how much gets lost in the torque convertor D4 HSE Lux for me

Is that the transient overboost on the turbo? I thought that was engine specific rather than gearbox specific

I was told it was just on the auto TD4, but I stand to be corrected D4 HSE Lux for me

Thanks for the replys. I had thought that the best choice would be an auto for its lower gearing but it is good to hear that that might be sorted on the manual too. Guess I'll need to wait and see in April.

I'm not sure if we are talking about the same feature. But it is a feature of the 2.2 engine that it has a short term overboost facility on the engine, from what I can understand the idea is to give you (the driver) a few seconds of additional turbo boost when pushed to the limit. It's a feature already there in the 2.2 diesel when fitted to the Mondeo ST and the Jaguar X type 2.2. so I'm expecting its the same for the Freelander application. I haven't read about any additional 'trickery' in the auto box but that may also be true.

We are talking about the same thing, but I thought it was an auto only feature. D4 HSE Lux for me
