The noise is so high pitched it's uncomfortable and loud enough to be heard whatever your age may be.
The noise was not present/ or rather noticeable on the demonstrator I tried and from reading the numerous posts on this it varies from vehicle to vehicle.

I really didn't notice it on the Demo despite driving it for nearly 3 hours straight, and you are right it is a little annoying. but I figure it will just get tuned out by my hearing after a while, SWMBO doesn't notice it but then she does have tinnitus so maybe that is the answer. SD4 Sport LE Firenze Red - no options or modifications yet, but it's early days.

Like I said before, I dont mind the noise of a turbo coming on boost - it sounds rather nice to me... its the whooshing noise of a blown turbo that sounds rubbish

I've got a new SD4 XS since March this year and it's just done 1000 miles. It has a loud turbo whistle under acceleration. It's annoying but unless there's a specific fix out there for it, I think I'll live with it.
It sounds like you're driving a big transit/sprinter van. Which I guess compared to my previous car (sporty petrol coupe), it is!

I too have moved from a long run of petrol coupe cars and it was a huge difference in sound. Guess it goes with the territory. But the +'s outway the -'s. Turn the radio up  2002 Honda VFR800

I have been suffering with this whistle and it is driving me mad. Can't get any sense out of LR dealer, but haven't really pushed it with a lack of time currently. I'm starting to think there is more to it than just a whistle and there is an associated lack of power, which in turn makes the gearbox appear dimwitted.

Its a turbo, it whistles.
In fact its a new turbo from Mitsubishi and a much, much better turbo unit than the crappy Borg warner and Honeywell units used before in land Rovers and Jags.

It aint gonna fail like tose units.
Personally i cant hear it and if I did, then I not going to obsess over it!

Next complaints about road tyre noise, Wind noise, ticking of the clock and the clunk of the doors is wrong!

Part of the problem is that the car is so refined otherwise that the turbo whistle is very obtrusive. I'm afraid it ruins an otherwise excellent car for me. And it clearly doesn't afflict all cars which must mean there manufacturing tolerances aren't tight enough.

It could be a leak in the air intake system. Might just be worth checking. But like most others, I think it's probably just a turbo thing. Had it once on a Sherpa with Ford engine. Only the one vehicle but it always did it.

We had our SD4 for about 6 weeks, and done 1200 miles so far.

With the windows up the whine is just about noticable when accerelating. Its only in the last few weeks where I've driven a with the windows down that I can appreciate how loud it can be.

It sounds different to the turbo whistling in my last diesel - which was much more high pitched and only kicked in at higher revs. The whistle in our FL2 sounds more like a low speed turbine made out of lightweight material in need of some lubricant.

I've gotten used to it already, and actually quite like the sound in an ashamedly immature way

Our 2011 SD4 also has that sound. We noticed it the moment we picked it up from the deals and reported it right a way.

Land Rover claimed it was an error and we were told they were going to fix it.

Here three month later, and after three weeks with our car in the shop, they now admit it’s a production error and they can’t fix it.

Who in their right mind approves the car for production with a sound like that?

This is our third Land Rover and we were prepared for minor errors and tweaks but this out of line.
