Why do you need it when you are UK based? Are you going to be traveling across permafrost sheet ice or hard packed solid snow for very long distances month in month out?

Save your money. If you put "Winter" tyres on you'll be able to negotiate with FL2's TR "Snow n Ice" all that Europe will throw at you - provided of course you have had some winter driving training. That option is far cheaper than investing in the LR Snow Traction System.

Isn't it a requirement even with correctly marked snow tyres on to carry a set of chains when in the alps etc?

Last thing you'll need is to be told you can't drive further if you haven't got a set in the boot in bad weather Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Might be worth having a look at the Roof Box Company. Their website lists a number of options for snow traction systems to fit a Freelander 2. This link gives options for 235/65/17 tyres.

My understanding is Spikes Spyder are virtually the same as the LR Snow Traction System.

I believe that the 342+VAT must be multiplied by 2 as in the description of the item clearly states:
For front 17 inch and 18 inch wheels only.
The common sense tells us that a snow sysytem must be put on all axles that have traction.
And as FL2 has no way of isolating which axle has power, you must have a snow traction system on both axles.

And beware the fact that with the original 18 inches rims, because the distance between the tire and the shock absorber housing on the rear wheels is very small, a snow chain that envelop the tire entirely could rub the shock absorber housing.
So I believe that you must be very carefull about the snow system that you use...

342+ Luxury Tax is a very good price for new, just more than I want to spend. thanks anyway. 

Many people think that a snow traction system is for proper take off...
Yes, it is, but in fact it's more important/needed for stopping the car, when braking.
Service brake or engine brake, the later being recommended on winter.
And a 4wd car will engine brake with all 4 wheels, so both axles.
I, for one, on slippery conditions, prefer to have all 4 wheels properly used for stopping the car.

OK, when you use service brake, the rear axle on FL2 will be isolated from powertrain, but still the ABS will have a much easier job with a snow traction system on rear wheels than without.
In contrast, with engine brake the rear axle remains connected with the rest of the powertrain through the Haldex, so all 4 wheels will be used for braking.

Having used the traction system mentioned in the bad snow last year (only for testing as the car was fantastic without them) I would say that having them on the front was all that is necessary. As well as added traction, better stopping and brilliant steering capabilities, it is such a quick system to use. The initial set up of fixing the plate to the wheels (it locks onto the wheel nut heads and stays there as long as you have bad weather) is about 10 mins, then to actually put on the chains is about 30 seconds per wheel.
I agree, you may not need these but you have to have tried them to really understand how good they are. As for the closeness to the shocks, these do not go all around the tyre, just across the middle 3/4 of tread.
