Interesting. Years ago I spent some time in the council offices in Maidstone marking up my maps with all the Kent BOATs and RUPPs. The then footpaths officer (a Mr Ducker - strange that I remember his name!) was very helpful and keen for us to help open paths. All council offices should have a full and definitive set of RoW maps for you to check. Drawbacks:
1- the RoW maps don't al;ways show TROs, which can be a nuisance.
2 - "County" Roads (such as Rudland Rigg in N Yorks, which has featured on here rcently) come under highways, not footpaths, so have no special marking on OS maps or county maps. They just show up as "white" roads. In the case of Kent, they had managed to lose their records of these, so although they have an obligation (of sorts) to maintain them, they had no idea where they were! A good clue though is if footpaths and other RoWs stop at a "white" road on the map. This almost certainly means it's a county road with a vehicular right of way.
Note also that these are trailriders maps. A motorcycle can go where not even a Landrover may follow! Having a right of way doesn't mean it's passable.

Lol, got it!

The number of places where you can use a motor vehicle 'off road' in the Countryside is limited by the law. Unless you have the landowners permission you are restricted to one type of Public Right of Way. These are known as Byways Open to All Traffic (BOATs) or Unclassified County Roads (UCRs).

Note: The NERC Act re-classified Roads Used as Public Paths (RUPPs) to Restricted Byways (RBs) and made it illegal for Mechanically Propelled Vehicles to use RBs. There are some exceptions, please see the NERC act section 67.

Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO's) are used to close a Byway for repairs or alterations or to permanently prohibit vehicular traffic. You must follow the instructions displayed on the notices at the end of the affected section.

No idea. Try their FAQ page or email them. I am not registered but I simply use the map browsing system. Very useful. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

For Trailwise you have to be a GLASS member and you then get full access. Previous owner of;

Thanks parallax33. That's brought me up to date!

It is quite important to know where you can legally drive, as there are penalties for doing it wrong. That said, there can also be penalties for doing it right (doesn't stop irate farmers waving shotguns, or bigotted walkers attacking your paintwork). Discretion is important, and so is the obligation to avoid green lanes during or after bad weather, when you may damage them (GLASS is big on this). Sometimes there are special rules for problem areas, like Dartmoor, where it is basically illegal to drive off road (unless you join the army and book a training area!). It can be good to have a good relationship with the local footpaths officer, since if they are sympathetic they actually have quite mindboggling legal powers to go onto people's land with heavy equipment in order to carry out "maintenance", remove obstacles etc.

Still the main rules are 1) not to go alone, as without backup even a breakdown would be embarrassing, let alone getting stuck or damaged, and 2) not to do anything to give off-roaders a bad (worse?) name.
